9.20 A wknd w/ Short Porch
The band on pup appreciation, the edible/cartoon combo and the last show of the summer THIS SATURDAY at Rippers
Just googled “first day of fall 2024,” and it would appear that autumn in all its crispy/cozy/spooky/pumpkin-spice-flavored glory is officially arriving THIS SUNDAY—
Which means you’ve got two… well, 1.5… days of summer left. And BdBK bffs Short Porch are here to tell you how to spend ‘em.
Subscribers (real ones like u!) will remember Short Porch from an August edition of THE RIDER, where the band — fresh off the release of their single “Good Times,” a space-y celebration and intergalactic ode to enjoyment—shared their TOP 10, a list featuring products and practices including cheap beer, baked goods, the smack of a cowbell and a secret-weapon synth.
That feature was released right before a Rippers show last month, and now Short Porch is back in your inbox with a rockaway-n-roll redo as they prepare to hit the beachside stage with Big Girl, SKORTS and Wakala for St. Rippers Day TOMORROW NIGHT!
As for other (more inland) opps to catch Short Porch, you’ve got September 26th at Brooklyn Made for the Sharkswimmer single release…
Plus our 10/30 show at Union Pool with Richard Lloyd—of Television!—Group and Kristin Flammio & the Pretty Bitchin. (Grab those tix right here.)
Now that we’ve sufficiently filled up your fall schedule with Short Porch shows, scrollllll onnnnn for the band’s blueprint 4 the weekend, featuring not only your last show of the summer, but one that just might be the most epic yet…

FRIDAY
When you roll out of bed on Friday morning, there’s no better way to start off your day than to head over to Kings Kolache on Starr Street; they’ve got breakfast tacos, good coffee, Dr. Pepper for your hangover, and they show the proper respect to the pups (free dog treats and photo wall). Also, they’re just good people.
Maybe you spend the day working a shit job. It’s ok though because this weekend is going to be a good time. Plus, it’s lunch break. Walk over to Maria Hernandez; it’s a great place to sit for a while with the headphones on and people watch at lunchtime.
At night, you head over to Velma Restaurant on Seneca. The pepperoni and grandma pizza are secretly the best pizza in the neighborhood and there is a sexy bartender with green hair and a grill on his teeth making espresso martinis. Also, Sean (SP singer) works there on Fridays so you say what’s up. Mudge (SP guitar) is probably also there being fed cheap beer by aforementioned green hair bartender and Velma’s owner, JR.
SATURDAY
Saturday morning you should sleep in. When you get up grab some coffee at La Cabra on Willoughby. The coffee is heavenly and the manager, Micah, can talk music and shoot the shit with anyone.
After a long hang, you walk down to Mama Yoshi Mini Mart for their legendary Chicken Katsu sandwich. You’ve got to coat the stomach because there’s something big coming tonight: St Rippers Day, the penultimate party on the beach, the closing day and final show at Rippers before they close up for the season.
You decide you’re trying to look sexy af for the show so you head over to Left Field on Woodward and grab a nice camp collar shirt and some real American denim. Now you’re geared up for this shit.
At Rippers, you’ll be crushing Beach Juice and Medalla all day long and shoving their legendary cheeseburgers until there isn’t any space left in that tummy. Jimmy and the gang stacked the lineup with two of Brooklyn’s best bands rn; Big Girl and Skorts. Plus, Rockaway locals Wakala are playing and apparently they get HEAVY. There’s also some other band on the bill singing about some guy they might have killed. By the end of the night your neck probably hurts and you’re so full and drunk that you’re thinking about sleeping on the beach under the stars. Hopefully, you just break the bank for an uber.
SUNDAY
Sunday morning, you’re trying to recover and get a proper meal so you head over to Queens Room in Astoria. They are the fuckin queens of brunch. You will probably have your order taken by a slightly hungover MK (SP keys) so you can reminisce about how epic Rippers was last night while shoving biscuits and gravy in your face.
Sunday afternoon, you just chill and relax; Toss on some cartoons, eat a few lil edibles, and order some egg drop wonton soup from New City Chinese on Knickerbocker. You take some time to think back to St Rippers yesterday and start to realize that the weird band singing about killing a guy were actually alright and maybe you want to see them again at Brooklyn Made on Thursday with Sharkswimmer, A Very Special Episode, and Jelly Kelly. You buy the tix. Not a bad weekend.
