THE RIDER: Short Porch's Top 10
Ahead of their show at Rippers THIS EVENING, the band on baked goods, cheap beer and the occasional smack of the cowbell
Sorry to hit you with that double text but HAPPY SATURDAY! Consider this email a digital call to let the good times commence—
And ayyyyyyyy, have we got the music for THAT!
Today marks the drop of “Good Times,” the new shout-along single—a space-y celebration and intergalactic ode to enjoyment— from Brooklyn’s best, Short Porch!
And boy oh boy, do we love it a lot.
“Good Times’ is the first single off a little two-song EP we’re releasing on August 24th called Short Porch…in Space,” Sean McNulty of the band shared. “It wasn’t a conscious decision at all, but we wrote two songs that were both space-related and decided to run with it. ‘Good Times’ details an alien abduction and some kind of galactic dance party, but at its core it’s really about choosing good times over money, power, or whatever other materialistic bullshit most people would wish for. I don’t know why, but ‘Good Times’ feels like our version of a Meat Loaf song and I kind of love that.”
And speaking of good times, they’re 100% guaranteed at Rippers THIS EVENING, where Short Porch will be hitting the sandy stage to rock the boardwalk (for freeeeee) with the dream of a lineup that is Desert Sharks, SKORTS and Real Burn.
As for your ride-to-Rippers soundtrack (accompanied by some inside intel), check out the track-by-track breakdown of the band’s debut album The best of…Short Porch vol.1—a product of three days of recording in Connecticut, where all the band did was make music, drink twisted teas and barbecue. (You can practically smell the sauce, mannnn.)
As for more opps to catch Short Porch live, WELL:
August 24th - Shea Stadium x Trash Casual @ Rippers w/ So So Glos, Lost Boy?, Dead Tooth
September 26th @ Brooklyn Made w/ A Very Special Episode, Sharkswimmer, Jelly Kelly
Now grab your swimsuit and check the A train status (or recruit that one sort-of-friend who randomly has a car). Then, right before you head out to the Rock(&roll)aways, read on to discover what fuels Short Porch as a group of musicians and friends, from cheap beer to Margaritaville, baked goods and a secret-weapon synth.
SHORT PORCH’S TOP 10
1. Jon’s baking
Jon is the best baker in town and shows up to practice/shows to present us with magical, tasty treats ranging from black and white cookies, gourmet cakes, and his legendary mac and cheese.
2. Cheap beer
Our practice space is always stocked with PBR or some other cheap beer. We are also Twisted Tea fans and MK is basically sponsored by Boozy Teas. Gotta keep the fridge stocked!
3. Punctuality
We are locally known as the most punctual band in Brooklyn. Ask anyone. 5pm sound check? We’re there by 3pm. It’s something we’re very proud of; especially Jon.
4. Korg Minilogue
MK’s friend, Kevin, recently gifted her this synth after she played a show with him and it has been a game changer for us. It is all over our upcoming releases “Good Times” and “Comet.”
5. Anchored Inn
We’re big fans of the buffalo chicken sandwich at Anchored Inn. Also, we love to play pool, so this place checks all the boxes for us. They have two pool tables and used to serve pitchers.
6. The Van
Shout out to Queen’s Room in Astoria. MK’s girlfriend, Antonia, lends us the old trusty van from Queen’s Room whenever we go on a little tour. We throw some beach chairs back there and load it up with trail mix before we hit the road.
7. Margaritaville
Somehow “Margaritaville” has become a staple of our practices. RIP Jimmy, we love you.
8. Doodles
Mudge and I love to doodle. You can find our masterpieces on our show fliers, and on our stickers/merch. Mudge, Tor (my wife), and I have also done some serious doodling on the walls of our practice space on Ten Eyck.
9. ProCo Rat
Mudge has an old Rat on his pedal board and it is a pretty big part of our sound. Lately, it has a mind of its own; sometimes it works, sometimes it kind of works, sometimes it just shits out. We recorded “Good Times” thinking it was on for the take we wound up keeping. Turns out the fucker was off the whole time.
10. Cowbell
Joe has been trying to work his cowbell into Short Porch since the beginning. He uses it on an unreleased track called “Plum Island Vacation,” but just having the cowbell around for an occasional smack is always a good time.
