THE RIDER: Ok Cowgirl's Top 10
Ahead of Everything is Fucked Fest™ THIS SUNDAY at Purgatory, the band on Budweiser, dirty jokes and Larry David (the man, the myth, the legend—and the eponym of their brand-new single)
EVERYTHING IS FUCKED!
Not just an observation (!), but perhaps our favorite refrain of all time, courtesy of Ok Cowgirl—whose newest track “Larry David” is OUT NOW!
As a music fan, there is perhaps no worse torture than falling in love with a song that isn’t released—to hear it live but not be able to take it home or send it to your friends or listen on repeat on the subway or sing along in the shower. And we’ve been waiting anxiously for the drop of the anthem named for our personal lord & savior LD since the band debuted it at Union Pool back in December 2022. (And we are not patient people.)
As of Wednesday, we’re incredibly stoked that the song is officially out in the world (like, legit maybe more stoked than the actual band) — and that, as a bonus, it’s accompanied by a truly glorious music video that’s part silly, part sentimental and demonstrates that somehow, against all odds, everyone in the band still looks super hot in a bald cap.
As for the story behind “Larry David,” in a press release, singer/songwriter/all-around-amazing human Leah Lavigne shared the following on the track:
"We often begin rehearsal by sitting around and catching up as friends. One evening when everyone had a particularly hard day our conversation ended with someone declaring 'everything is fucked'. I suggested that instead of jumping into running our set we blow off some steam by jamming. Jake started playing some chords, Matt locked in with a beat, and I jokingly screamed 'everything is fucked', improvising the first verse until we broke down in laughter. We all agreed we had to write this song then and there."
And now that the song is out, it’s time for a celebration. Don’t miss Everything is Fucked Fest—a day party (bless!) that is going down at Purgatory THIS SUNDAY from 2-6pm with performances from BdBK faves Ok Cowgirl, Wetsuit and Mary Hood. (And, sweetest of all, all proceeds from ticket sales going to Anera Gaza Relief.)
(It’s guaranteed to be a pretty… pretty…. prettyyyyyy good time.)
ALRIGHT! Let the countdown begin for the new Ok Cowgirl LP Couldn't Save Us From My Gut — out August 16th! — and then read on for the band’s Top 10, featuring, among other things, football, Frog and Budweiser (only one of which is tattooed on the lower back of one of the band members….).
YEEHAW! We’ll see ya Sunday~
OK COWGIRL’S TOP 10
1. Budweiser
This band runs on B.U.D.W.E.I.S.E.R. (Because U Deserve What Every Individual Should Enjoy Regularly). It is the best beer flavored beer in our opinion. If you're lucky enough to see us play live when Jake is wearing one of his crop tops, his lower back tattoo just might help you understand how deeply we love this beverage.
2. Curb Your Enthusiasm
There is a reason why I reference Larry David in the bridge of our latest single. "Larry David" is a song we wrote together at rehearsal one day, and while improvising the lyrics I mentioned him because he is kind of just always on our mind. We love referencing Curb and Seinfeld and calling out moments in our day to day life that feel like an episode of Curb.
3. Mango
No, not the fruit. Mango is the name of our beloved plushy toy Avocado. Mango was originally our friend PJ's companion when he broke his foot, and he was given this name because "Man-go nowhere with broken foot." Mango accidentally ended up in our car when we were driving down to Austin for SXSW a couple years ago, and Matt's car became his new home.
4. Football
We love to toss a football and share joint custody of one. We bring it pretty much everywhere we go as a group.
5. Frog
The band Frog is the GOAT. Our favorite album of theirs is probably Count Bateman. But we love them all, and can't make it through a road trip without having a sing along moment.
6. Danny's Pizza
The grandma pie with pepperoni is our most common form of sustenance. This is the closest pizza shop to where we rehearse in the Danbro building. We begin most rehearsals by sharing a pie, so you have Danny's to thank for fueling most of our music making.
7. Coffee
We all love coffee. We love drip coffee from a diner, good espresso, and pretty much everything in between depending on the time and place. Ryan is our coffee connoisseur, and you can count on him to pack a Bialetti when we go on tour.
8. Jake's Guild
Jake plays a Guild '64 Starfire IV. So much of our sound is shaped by Jake playing with feedback and having a ton of control over it which he attests largely to this beautiful semi-hollow electric guitar.
9. Dirty Jokes
Whether I'd like to admit it or not, this band's love language is dirty jokes. I don't know what it is about immature jokes that we find so endlessly amusing. But it's 2024 and we still can't make it a day without a "that's what she said."
10. Parodies
We try not to take ourselves too seriously. Almost every song of ours has a ridiculous secret parody.
