THE RIDER: Frida Kill's Top 10
The band on sandwich hacks, signature jackets and Baby J the pink-haired tour troll
Run out to Rockaway for a nutcracker. Bounce over to the bodega for a BEC. Grab your friends (& a slice) and run these streets like the rats —
City Gurl, the new album from Frida Kill, is out now!
While made by a Brooklyn band, this record wasn’t made in a New York minute.
Rather City Gurl — which packs a sound the band describes as “bold, complex, loud and very emotional” — is a product of patience and pivots. It’s a set of songs written and recorded over a significant timespan, influenced by the artists’ experiences both at home and away… packed with feeling and infused with a whole lotta life.
Of the making of their album, Frida Kill says:
“The approach to the recording process for this record was a lot different than when we did the first one. We took a lot more time and songs changed (sometimes significantly) between our recording sessions. The bulk of Kill Kill was recorded in a single weekend, the songs on City Gurl were recorded over something like 16 months. Our first day in the studio with this one happened before Kill Kill even came out…
Taking so much time provided an opportunity to think about all the elements of the songs in a different way. We tried a lot of stuff. We scrapped a lot of stuff. If something wasn’t working we’d try something else. During the making of City Gurl a lot of life happened—the obvious stuff like touring and playing to audiences outside of New York—but also things in our personal lives. All of that bleeds into the sound of the record and the lyrics of the songs.”
Grab your gurls and hit the town to celebrate Frida Kill (and this un-bel-iev-able bill) at their album-release show THIS SUNDAY at Main Drag!

FRIDA KILL’S TOP 10
1. A solid breakfast sandwich
A bacon, egg and cheese on roll can turn a bad day around. Just don’t put ketchup on Maria’s. Weird hotel eggs, piled onto a piece of toast with plenty of hot sauce, do the trick in a pinch.
2. Strong coffee
Black iced coffee for Jeanette. Maria likes a splash of oat milk and some cinnamon. Light and sweet for Gaby. Matcha for Lily.
3. A signature jacket
Denim, leather or the signature Insecurity Hits windbreaker are all great choices for the road.
4. Tour mascots
It’s unsafe to go alone, travel with a friend from home. Our first few tours featured Baby J – a fabulous troll doll with bright pink hair. Last time we played out of the city we came back with a festive hot-pink pig named Katie. Who knows what road friends we will pick up out west.
5. Extra guitar straps
Seems dumb, but you’d be surprised how often they come in handy.
6. Shea butter
100 Percent African shea butter IFYKYK.
7. A tiny travel pillow and an eye mask
Both are great for napping in the tour vehicle or keeping the bright light out when sleeping in unexpected places that lack blackout curtains.
8. Bright colors or all black everything
It’s important to touch base with your bandmates about stage fits before the show.
9. A pre-show text
One or two that says “Please bring the merch” or “what is everyone wearing?”
10. The 10 tracks on City Gurl
We seriously can’t wait for you to hear these songs!
