THE RIDER: Diary's Top 10
The band on micheladas, chaos magic and the trademark Marge Simpson noise (you know the one)
Dear Diary…
SO BEGINS our virtual fan mail for the Brooklyn-based band who blend jangle pop and post-punk, shoegaze and psychedelia, to craft a sweet sound well worth writing about (even if only it’s in a pink-and-purple-cat-emblazoned Lisa Frank notebook with a heart-shaped lock that you keep under your bed) (hypothetically).
The latest edition to the Diary discography is the Stereogum-loved, KEXP-lauded, BdBK-beloved EP Speedboat, which dropped via Kanine Records last year.
But there’s more music where that came from—and soon! Diary’s new single/video drops May 1st, and with a debut LP in the works, we’ve got a whole lot more from the band to look forward to too.
Before the five-piece crosses the pond for their UK tour next month, don’t miss the opp to cheer(io) them on THIS WEDNESDAY as they hit the stage at OWL with RIP Dunes, No Bones and Portugal’s own Ditch Days.
It’s ROOFTOP WEATHER BABY —
GRAB YOUR TIX HERE. Then read on for Diary’s Top 10 — a list featuring fancy cocktails, far-out literature and some very specific sounds.

DIARY’S TOP 10
1. Kinder chocolate bars
Goddamnit, these things are so good. I used to only be able to find them at bodegas that stocked imported snacks, but they're starting to pop up more these days. The Euro ones are unmatched though. (Chris)
2. Karaoke at Lion’s Roar
Or anywhere for that matter. That’s the Diary pastime. (Adam)
3. A French 75
To bring on stage to sip. (Jess)
4. Rollerskate Skinny
Just a super rad Irish band from the 90s, featuring Kevin Shields’s brother!! They have a kind of psyched-out Brit-pop vibe with like druggy shoegaze sections. It's pretty propulsive stuff and reminds me a little of Psychic TV or Wire sort of. (Kevin)
5. I need to do a little shimmy to shake the nerves off
Do a little dance pre-set and down a sugar-free Red Bull to really maximize my anxiety and energy! (I’m ok i swear.) (Yan)
6. The sound of a single coil Jaguar into a Deluxe Reverb with the amp volume set to 4, with some tasty chorus and some spring reverb thrown in there
This sounds like total bliss. Toss in an 1176 compressor and a tiny bit of slapback and I'm in heaven. (Chris)
7. I need a fresh manicure
Color: Little Red Corvette. (Jess)
8. A falafel from Newtown…
And a michelada from Anchored Inn. (Adam)
9. Thee Psychick Bible
It’s a great entry point into Genesis P-Orridge’s mind, and I’m constantly finding different points of inspiration for songs in the words. Def worth checking out if you have even a passing interest in stuff like chaos magic, astral projecting, or cryptograms. (Kevin)
10. The Marge Simpson noise
You know the one. The default is the disappointed/annoyed grumble, but there's a lot of range to it beyond that and it's always funny. (Chris)
