8.13 A wknd w/ A Very Special Episode
Kasey Heisler of the post-punk trio on bibimbap, dog-watching and a very special block party
!TGIF! DO THE DAMN THING W/ AVSE
Back in April, as we were just starting to ease back into (sort of) normalcy and feel the sun on our un-masked faces, we premiered + crowd-surfed through space with the super rad music video for A Very Special Episode’s “Introspectre.”
“The lyrics are all about the anxieties and obsessive, haunting thoughts that sometimes make it difficult to live out in the world, or even leave the house,” the band told us of the track. “And then when, of course, we couldn’t leave for a really long time they felt relevant in a whole new way.”
Fast-forward four months and we haven’t totally returned to B.C. times, but we’re definitely a hell of a lot closer, and one of the most beautiful things about Brooklyn opening all the way up has been the opportunity to meet the artists we’ve become Internet BFFs with IRL. And just as expected, the post-punkers of AVSE—whom we recently encountered in full 3D form at where else but a show—are just as delightful in person as they are over email and Instagram.
Now that we’ve caught the artists in the crowd, we’re beyond stoked to finally see them on stage. Fresh off their recent two-track release Cowboy/Weather the Storm and the music vid (below) for the first song, A Very Special Episode is comin’ atcha live as 1/5 of the killer New Colossus lineup (+ the (un)official opener for Modest Mouse) taking over 18th Ward Brewing tomorrow.
So! Saturday plans: check. As for the rest of the weekend, Kasey Heisler of AVSE has got you covered. Head over to Bandcamp to pre-order the trio’s forthcoming album FIX YOUR HEARTS OR DIE (out October 12th!) on some sick red w/ black marble vinyl, and let three days of coffee, live music and more commence!
It’s gonna be a good one. We’ll see you out there~

FRIDAY
Friday evening the first thing we’re thinking about is dinner. A great move is to head over to Little Dokebi on the corner of Driggs and Monitor in Greenpoint. Grab yourself a seat at one of the outdoor dining tables and take in a view of McGolrick Park as you indulge in delicious bibimbap and a frozen soju cocktail - a great way to start the weekend!
Next, take a short walk into East Williamsburg across from Cooper Park to take in a fantastic show of buds playing at Pet Rescue! Our friends in Gorgeous and Color Tongue are part of a killer bill with Edna and Slow Fiction that you won’t want to miss!! [Details below!]
SATURDAY
Hungover or not, breakfast at a diner is always a good way to kick off an action-packed Saturday. Head on over to Sunset Diner for coffee served in excellent diner mugs and something to fuel your stomach for the big day ahead. If meat is your thing, we can definitely recommend the sausage links - they are substantial!
Once you're awake and full, make your way over to 18th Ward Brewing for an outdoor block party show presented by the New Colossus Festival. Five bands, including yours truly, will be rocking the afternoon away out on the street as a pre-game party to the sold out Modest Mouse show across the street at Brooklyn Steel. Rumor has it that 18th Ward now has a new taco cart outside that you don’t want to miss (if you’re not too full from your diner breakfast). Come hang out with us as we vibe to Phantom Handshakes, Forever Honey, Nicole Mercedes, and The Aberdeen!
If you, like us, don’t have tix to the Modest Mouse show don’t fret! There is an amazing bill of solo sets at the new Footlight underground at The Windjammer in Ridgewood. Can’t wait to check out the new space and hear some lovely music from friends Dalton Deschain and Dylan Roth along with Caderwall and Nick Miller (I assume it's not the New Girl character but I’m excited to find out!)
SUNDAY
Big Fridays and Saturdays call for very chill Sundays. Sleep in before wandering over to McGolrick Park to wander through the Farmers Market. After stocking up on veggies, meats, fish, and kimchi from the various vendors, grab a coffee or some baked goods at Variety Coffee and take in the cute pups big and small at the dog park.
If you hang out in the area long enough you can wander over to The Palace after 4 to relax with a chill drink and some delicious fries (ask for the kewpie mayo to dip into) while you continue to enjoy the waning summer air.
Remember to make sure you have your vaccine card or Excelsior pass on you to gain admission into the indoor shows and if you haven’t gotten the jab yet, skip all of this and do that first! Hope to see you out and about this weekend!
Itinerary above written + submitted by AVSE. Follow the band at @avsepisode, grab music + merch on Bandcamp and add the songs to your Spotify playlists!
