9.9 A wknd w/ M the Myth
The Wavys performer on park picnics, 2 a.m. Grindr-ing and the Saturday-evening awards show
LET’S GET *~*~*~WAVY~*~*~* BABY!
This weekend marks the second year of The Wavy Awards, an awards show “celebrating historically minoritized artists” with a mission of “flipping the script on the status quo for the music industry by standardizing inclusivity and disability.”
The Wavys are the beautiful brainchild of BdBK friend and occasional collaborator Rebecca Autumn Sansom of Blonde Records, who dreamed it up then built it up from the ground up, managing to pull together an incredible inaugural event last year that earned the attention of minor outlets such as Billboard, The Hollywood Reporter and The New York Times — and this Saturday, the event is BACK, baby!
The Wavy Awards are going down at The Abrons Arts Center and you’re invited! Grab your tickets here for the event, which features a ceremony, a red carpet (aka an opp to maybe see some BK bands wearing… ties?!) (let’s not get crazy) and, of course, live performances from some very excellent artists—
THAT brings us to M the Myth! We were first intro’d to the musician what feels like 500 years ago (it was… *checks calendar*… 2 1/2) in March 2020, where at the very beginning of the pandemic we threw together with Left Bank Magazine and Blonde Records to throw together LEFT BANK LIVE, a multi-day virtual music festival.
Not sure if you can remember that far back, but this was when live-streaming was still novel and fun and not even really a real thing—back before the tech was common knowledge and we all had tidy and carefully curated Zoom-appropriate apartment corners that made us look like we semi had our shit together. But even in this strange time and a confined space, with little notice and limited resources, M truly brought it on the performance front, working their music and their magic to not just sing to/through a screen but establish a vibe and create an experience that truly wowed—even in 2D form.
Given what they did alone with a webcam in their bedroom (whoops, that didn’t sound right), we’re super hyped to see what M brings to the stage of the Abrons Arts Center during their performance at The Wavys TOMORROW NIGHT.
As for the rest of the weekend? YOU KNOW THE DRILL! Read on and take a cue from M for what’s going to be a beautiful and celebratory (+ apparently kinda slutty?!) weekend.
AKA the best kind. ENJOY!
