HAPPY FRIDAY TO ALL WHO CELEBRATE!
We are thrilled to announce that, after a casual 27-month gestation period, Bands do BK THE BOOK made its entrance into the world on September 6th, 2022, 12:00 a.m., weighing in at … well, that depends on whether you bought the hardcover or paperback.
Mother and baby are doing well, but let us tell you, this parenting thing is no joke!!!!!!!! So, please forgive us if we take one more week to get our shit together, at which point we will return to regularly planned SETLIST programming..
But before that: WEEEEEEEEEE PARTY!

A LOOK INSIDE THE BOOK
Ahead of this weekend’s BANDS DO BK BOOK BASH at Our Wicked Lady, an excerpt from Bands do BK — THE BOOK (available here) featuring love for one of BK’s best venues.
Kira Metcalf: I first found myself at OWL for a Pom Pom Squad show in the summer of 2019, a time when it was wholly acceptable if not encouraged to throw yourself into a sweaty pile of strangers on a rooftop in Brooklyn with a tequila soda spilling down your arm. I loved the venue right away not only for its name or because the show was so good. Every room had an energy that was equal parts inviting and exciting, which can most assuredly be attributed to their killer staff.
Gillian Visco: I love this place because everyone from the owners to the staff, to all the people that play there, to the people that do the door, everyone is super sweet and nice.
Nick LaFalce: I remember just within the first few times I went I was just meeting so many people that were so just authentic and cool and playing in cool bands and doing interesting things.
Kate Black: You can tell that the bar is owned by people who are invested in and part of the music community in Brooklyn. They created a really welcoming place to play music. It’s never stressful and always feels like you’re just part of the fam.
Gillian Visco: We played there, and we were on the roof and Keith, one of the owners, is bartending in the back. It feels very homegrown. It’s like family when you’re there. When you’re here, you’re family.
Joe Dahlstrom: They put in their work. They worked really hard, and they’re still working really hard.
Zach Ellis: I think Our Wicked Lady is just really like a perfect blend of professional and just cool people running it. Like, it’s clearly a very legal and wonderful establishment, but you don’t feel like you’re in some snooty venue.
Johnny Dynamite: I’ve been so thankful for their presence in our little scene.
Gillian Visco: I’m there like, three times a week. Like, when I open my Uber app, it automatically suggests Our Wicked Lady.
Nikki Sisti: This venue is right near our practice space and something I bike past on a daily basis. I usually know people standing out front and get pulled in for a drink or ten. I find the venue to be really welcoming and it’s open to a variety of different genres and groups of people.
Dane Zarra: We’ve had many hangouts on the rooftop, watching our friends and bandmates playing in their sidebands.
Emily Ashenden: It’s where we [95 Bulls] were conceived like a big angry baby.
Johnny Dynamite: They have such a welcoming vibe, and their roof will always be my first choice for throwing a big show. I remember when I moved to Bushwick, I would pass the venue on my way home from work and hear all the noise bellowing from their rooftop.
Michelle Birsky: That was how I learned about Our Wicked Lady the first time. I heard music, and I was like, where the hell is that coming from? We ran upstairs and it was some weird night where they were passing out Jager shots. After that, I was like, we need to play this roof!
Johnny Dynamite: At the time I thought, damn, I hope I can play that roof someday, thinking it was some exclusive spot. But it’s not, it’s for the community.
Shane Preece: Playing there with fuckin’ open skies and the breeze hitting you is just an epic, epic thing.
Nikki Sisti: My favorite memory is when THICK played a show there on the rooftop, before they had a canopy. We were headlining, and there was one more band before us. We saw the clouds above and knew a storm was on its way. The band before us was about to finish their set when it started to pour. The band continued to play their last song, and it was just really beautiful, all of us singing and dancing in the rain. Unfortunately, the rain was too much, and one of their amps exploded and caught fire! Rather than throw in the towel, the OWL staff kept the party going! They had the bands and the crowd help move all the gear to their downstairs bar. We were all soaked downstairs, and it felt like a house party. It was a blast, and I always really appreciated how the OWL staff was so easygoing and positive. They now have a canopy on their rooftop, so hopefully there will be no more exploding amps. Unless someone is rocking too hard.
Kate Black: Yes! That is one of my all-time favorite show memories. It was a sad day for OWL’s new mixing board, but it was worth the scramble to pack everyone in downstairs. I vaguely remember shots being poured in our mouths while we were shouting our lyrics at the top of our lungs, standing on a table and not really being able to tell the difference between the rain and our sweat.
Michelle Birsky: We’ve had bad shows there, and we’ve had good shows there, and you know, it’s just a community feel.
Gillian Visco: Our Wicked Lady is my home away from home.
