8.27 A wknd w/ Ilithios
The artist on cemetery birds, the borough's best mole and Sunday's No New Wave 2 fest in Rockaway
!TGIF! DO THE DAMN THING W/ ILITHIOS
It’s the first day of spring, and a half-dozen of us are standing six feet apart, sucking the foam off beers we transferred into bodega coffee cups for drinking discretion while a battery-powered bubble machine spews soapy spheres into the face of latex-clad Madi Cox (Space Sluts), who’s performing a synthy cover of Britney Spears’ “Toxic” in front of East Williamsburg Econo Lodge. The sun is shining, and after ~374 days (BUT WHO’S COUNTING), we’re finally seeing live music sans screen.
We’ve never, ever been happier.
Welcome (retroactively) to No New Wave Fest 1: an outdoor live-streamed concert event—which we may or may not have technically crashed—produced back in March by organizers including Manny Nomikos (Ilithios), who later that afternoon performed a killer sidewalk set of his own.
Fast-forward five months, and our bodies and bank accounts can def attest to the fact that LIVE MUSIC IS BACK, BABY—but that doesn’t make us any less excited for No New Wave 2. The summer sequel to the fest is taking place THIS SUNDAY (this time, 100% IRL!) down at Rockaway Beach and features a stacked lineup of BdBK faves including Ilithios, Ana Becker, The Black Black and more.
Since Manny had already done the hard work of organizing an entire festival, we asked the Brooklyn artist to go ahead and plan our weekend too, and the result is a glorious itinerary featuring bowling, an ~exclusive~ breakfast-sandwich recipe and some very good (+ very FREE) live music.
For a look/listen at/of Manny’s own music, check out the gorgeous video for “Leave the Country” (featuring Rosie Slater of New Myths and Sharkmuffin); Florist, one of our absolute favorite albums of 2020; and Airball, a cross-continental internet collab with Athens/Amsterdam artist Logout. Then for three days of fun, read on…
Your weekend starts now. Grab the sunscreen—let’s get started.
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
FRIDAY
6pm: Get on over to Prospect Park Bandshell to catch Yaeji! Free show starts at 7 so ditch work early, eat a bag of plantain chips, grab your proof of vax, and get a good spot to catch the show!
10:30pm: Oh no, shows over and you're in Prospect Park and you want a post show cocktail and some empanadas.. well, hop in a cab and head over to Art Cafe+Bar in Prospect Heights for some potato wedges, chicken+gouda empanada+and a Papaya Mezcal Mule. They have mesmerizing projections in the outdoor area on the side of the next door building. Outdoor and cozy!
SATURDAY
Greenwood Cemetery! Start your day taking a stroll thru the cemetery.. visit some of the famous residents like Basquiat and the fella who invented the hot dog. But more importantly, check out the Quaker Parrots that live there! They have a massive colony at the entrance on 25th Street/5th ave. You can hear them squawking as you walk under the arches.
Afternoon bowling at Melody Lanes in Sunset Park! Ok, so anyone in South Brooklyn knows about Melody Lanes and its famous bartender who is something of a scientist, or mathematician.. or philosopher? I forget... But it's a must visit to get some words of wisdom from this unique gentleman who's been serving drinks at the bowling alley for over 30 years! Plus, last time I was there they clocked the speed of your bowling ball so a fun game is to see who can bowl the fastest.
6pm: Early dinner at the best Mexican restaurant I've found, Panchitas Place. Get the slow cooked pulled chicken in mole sauce with lime-cilantro rice and beans! The waiter told us that the mole sauce is grandmothers recipe, who goes to Mexico each month to visit and brings back ingredients that cannot be bought in the stores, making their mole sauce so memorable. Is it the truth? Who knows. Is it the best MOLE sauce? You bet.
8pm: Seriously tho, aren't you exhausted after the cemetery, bowling, and a stomach full of food? It’s ok to head home, get in your PJs, call an old friend you haven't talked to in a while and sip on some on a grapefruit+gin+lime in a copper mug.
It’s ok causeeee…
SUNDAY
Wake up!
Make the best damn egg sandwich.
BDES-
2tbs butter in a pan set to medium/low
add 2-3 eggs + salt / pepper / dash of paprika
*while they cook make delicious spicy sauce:
2 tbs mayo/ 1 teaspoon siracha / 1 tablespoon gochujang / 1 tea spoon sesame oil / 1 teaspoon white wine vengar / 2 teaspoon honey and mix! add in more mayo if too spicy!
Flip the eggs!
Make toast…
Now fold the eggs over themselves and add slice of your fave cheese on top. Let melt. Spread spicy sauce on toast, put eggs on toast, add single slice of lettuce and enjoy!
Then grab your sun tan lotion, swim gear and head over to ROCKAWAY BEACH for No New Wave fest 2! Get there early and grab some sun and even jump in the water. By 2pm you should hear the vinyl selections or Selector IY. Then 2:30 it kicks off. Full lineup is Kahuna, Ana Becker, Papi Shiitake, Ilithios, The Black Black, and Desert Sharks. We're gonna be at the 94th Street plaza between the Rippers and Low Tide Concession stands so you got your choice of foods and drinks, but come back and spend the last weekend of the summer with us!
