8.16 A wknd w/ Canine Wedding
The band on ramen for breakfast, a Brat underwear party, and their single-release show TONIGHT at Bar Freda
Hear that?! It’s the sound of wedding balls (v squeaky!) calling all beagle brides and greyhound grooms…plus maybe a lil jack russell ring bearer, a french bulldog flower girl… and, idk, border collies would probably be pretty good ushers, right?… because this evening it’s time for a CANINE WEDDING!
Okay! Now that ~whatever that was~ is (mostly) out of our system, allow us introduce you to the 100% human and for-the-record-not-actual-wedding band that is Canine Wedding—
And let’s do it by way of their new track “Racetrack,” which just dropped this week!
Of the song, Cameron Toy — the guitarist/vocalist, who makes up 33.333333% of the NY/NJ queer trio—shared:
“‘Racetrack’ is less about losing everything and more about the fear of losing everything. That fear can prevent you from living in the present. You get it. I wrote it after I had a foster dog that got adopted. He was a huge asshole except to me and my partner (once he got a hearty bite of each of us). This song connotes him to me. There was him, an aggressive and fearful dog that was found in the woods with an overgrown coat and a torn leash dragging behind him, and there was me, an aspiring musician semi-employed as a food deliverist in a not-great town in the middle of the country. We ended up in each others’ lives at a time when neither of us were thriving and the world was ending. Then he got adopted and I left and got a band. I’ll never see him again and someday he’ll die and someday I’ll die. It’s basically La La Land. Anyway, RACETRACK.”
If you’re wondering what to expect from Canine Wedding, here’s a pretty… creative… description from the band:
“Experiencing Canine Wedding is akin to getting lost on a road trip and finding your new favorite restaurant, but then getting food poisoning, but then meeting the love of your life in the hospital. No emotion is off limits, no bodily function too grotesque. You don’t know how you got here, but you're glad that you did and you're planning the same trip next weekend.”
🤮❤️🤮❤️🤮❤️🤮❤️🤮❤️🤮❤️🤮
And SPEAKING OF WEEKEND! Canine Wedding has got a plan for yours. Read on — and then get out there and plz go have a really, really good one. <3

FRIDAY
It is night and you are hungry. It's time to hit one of the spots. There’s Abe’s Pagoda Bar if you want fun drinks (yes there’s a tiki thing going on) and a killer chicken sandwich or mapo tots. For more of a to-go or eat & run vibe go to Taqueria Al Pastor or Klom Klorm.
Step into Molasses Books for a little beverage and to read some of that book that you go there to read, possibly while standing in the middle of the store because the few seats are probably taken by “writer types”. Maybe even buy the book this time.
Roll on over to Bar Freda for showtime. Canine Wedding, Sangre, Brian Kish’s Lounge Pants, and VAMBI are playing. Sonic pleasure awaits. Earplugs never hurt though.
The show’s over and you can arrive late to Market Hotel’s brat underwear party. Will you be able to get in? I don’t know. Are you wearing cool underwear? Maybe if you read this list.
SATURDAY
Daytime has come again. Eat ramen with eggs and catch up on Big Brother. This season is really good.
Put on the same pants as yesterday as they still hold the previous night’s energy. Leave the house and go to Moxy Hotel for the Korean K9 Rescue (not-for-profit foster org) adoption event kicking off at noon. Maybe adopt a dog.
Get out of Williamsburg. Go back to beautiful Bushwick again and walk around. Try on some thrifties (L Train Vintage, OPC). It still counts as enrichment even if you walk away with nothing. Get some tacos at the tortilla factory. Immediately go to sleep wherever you are.
Go to a show again. Shadow Monster is playing with Cloakz, The Rizzos, and Leathered at Our Wicked Lady (a rooftop option??), or Nephewcube is playing with Pair of Sloths, Chico Raro, and Uncle Skunk at Main Drag. Enjoy the show but trust no one.
SUNDAY
We’re going to Chinatown. Meal 1 is at Golden Unicorn, where the hosts talk about you over walkie talkie and the bathrooms are nice. Dim sum is best with a medium-large number of people so you can get more dishes. For example, I once saw Woody Allen in here with like 6-7 Asians. They ate like kings.
Hit up New Cameron Bakery for pork buns and egg tarts among other things for later. Is the Portuguese style egg tart worth the extra 25 cents? I don’t know but I really vibe with the aesthetic.
Head a couple blocks west to Dream House to sit on a plush carpet and digest. They have a bathroom. Also it’s an immersive sound and light sensory exhibit. You just sit there. You’re gonna love it.
Go to Fallkill Falls in Prospect Park. You used to have to hop a fence behind baseball field 4 to go there but they took it down so now you can get in from wherever. Dip your feet or your whole ass in the puddle at the top of the waterfall. Don’t worry it’s mountain water. It’s fresh.
Go back to the same 5 block radius as always and go to Tong for dinner. Get the tartare just do it. And a fancy little drink. Big Brother is on again tonight.
