7.5 A wknd w/ 13th Law
The artist on broadway shows, ex-free beaches and his anti-4th jam session TONIGHT at Baby's All Right
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Here’s hoping you still have your hearing/sanity/stomach lining after yesterday. Not sure why fireworks last for 47 hours, but at least we’re done on that front! (Til New Years, at least…).
Now that the 4th is behind us and more hot dogs than the human brain can fully comprehend have been consumed across the country, we’d like to invite you to turn your eyes/ears/attention to THE ANTI-4TH, a jam session presented by NYC recored label Lucidhaus (“the home of timeless, post-genre Black music”) and NYC artist 13th LAW TONIGHT at Baby’s All Right!
The music kicks off at 10, while the jam starts at 11:45. BYO instrument, BYO voice and, in the words of 13th Law: “COME THRU AND PLAY YOUR HEARTS OUT. FUCK THE GREATER GLOBAL ESTABLISHMENT, JAM WITH US TIL THE SUN GREETs OUR SKIN.”
YOU HEARD ‘EM.
First though, please get acquainted with 13th Law via CRISISCORE, the artist’s first full EP, which was released in 2023 and is summed up by the artist as so:
“This record is about a plethora of things, most notably the self I lock eyes with when looking into the mirror, encompassing all past into one singular moment. The things that I am, things I have done, the ways I have thought, the self who has fought to shine through the muddiness of their own ego, accomplishments and mistakes alike. Explanations of creation destruction and neutrality. It’s also about the fun of sound! And I’ll let that one explain itself.”
Dig into that, then READ ON for an itinerary from 13th Law that, beyond this eve’s anti-fourth activities, features a whole lot of ways to treat yourself with art/food/friends/fun/fresh air in what is by far the best city (obviously) in this very complicated country.
Have a great—and safe—weekend, y’all. You earned it. <3
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
FRIDAY
This is 13th Law, AKA Evan Lawrence here to suggest some thangs for you to do that are safe to suggest to you, the reader, a stranger. Someone I do not know, but who I wish enjoys a wonderfully fun, anti-imperialist weekend!!! I won’t swamp your plans with too much; however, I’ll be mentioning some cute things so gear up!
First off!
I LOVE every single A24 film to ever come out. and this one is no exception even though Mia Goth is like 35% sus.
Earliest Screening of Maxxxine.
Afterwards head yo ass to LES, NYC’s prime area for the worst mix of natives and transplants any metropolitan area has ever known. There are some fun things to do, like hitting up Search n Destroy to Browse and be followed by their staff because you like to window shop for $800 Motorcycle jackets.
After that, you might be a little hungry so I'm gonna throw a lil cheap eats here: Ruby’s is one of my fave places to go w my gurlz/gworlz n its the perf place to catch up, and KiKi. So go! and enjoy a nice $20-something plate of protein and pasta because now we’re going to the GIGs.
First gig is @ Ki Smith Gallery on Forsyth St. Ran by a meek chill Guy, named Ki, Friday’s event is curated by Amani Fela, who operates Still Movin, with the occasional guest curation by myself and a plethora of community members. This show features Cleo Reed headlining and some other cool people!
AFTERWARDS: Come on BACK down to brooklyn, Bc lets face it, if you’re reading this you live here anyway. or in ridgewood! I, myself, the 13th LAW, am hosting an ANTI 4th Jam @ BABYS ALL RIGHT. Featuring: Miss Olithea, BK native who runs with the likes of legendary rock stars like Vernon Reid from Living Colour, in their Burny Sugar Orkestra, myself, Alex Koi doing an experimental Duo set, we’re both water signs so bring your KLEENEX because we’re going to summon Poseidon, who is probably very tired of coming to NYC every september. Followed by NYC’s native Sons, UNIVERSAL SPACE JAM: Which features Isaiah Barr of Onyx Collective Fame, and Griff Spex, one of Queens’s best rappers!!
after the sets though::: we will be JAMMING, EXPRESSING, CRYING, LOVING & SINGING! this is an OPEN JAM session so feel free to bring whoever you want (as long as they’re not any “ists”) and as long as they don’t support any current facet of the reach of American Imperialism!!! oh and BRING YOUR INSTRUMENTS~~~
SATURDAY
OKay, so. I used up all of my poetic vibes for that Friday post so I'm going to just post a little more militarily to get to the point a bit faster!!
Afternoon activity:
Xanadu Roller RINK. New venue from the creators of Sultan Room.
or
Vinyl Fantasy. Go shop for some Vinyl! or comics! The last book I got from here is a comic illustrated by famed FINAL FANTASY conceptual Artist, Yoshitaka Amano!!! I AM a nerd!!! I love it!!!
Afterwards take your ass to The Johnson’s bar for arguably the best Chicken sandwich in Meta Brooklyn [by Strange Flavors]. *Meta Brooklyn is the new pacified version we all know and love circa 2004*
OR ::: MY FAVORITE ASIAN SPOT, my number one “Spot” Dock Asian Eatery, where the large menu will overwhelm you just as much as the flavors do once the food meets your tongue!
OK WE READY FOR THE GIG AGAIN LFG
My dear friend Bobby Woody, Acclaimed Baltimore, Purchase, Rapper is playing a show at every Rock band’s favorite Rooftop. OWL!!! along With Rocky Snyda and a Slew of other cool musicians. CHECK IT OUT!!
AFTER OWL, my favorite bar: Carousel is likely the TO GO spot in this area for me on a night like this. If you get there early enough you can pretend to be a mob member inside of the conversation pit with you and your friends, while you sneer at all groups of people less than 3 who try to fit in the area for their own aesthetic purposes (even though they know!! that their asses canNOT fit!!!)
You will probably be reasonably inebriated after this, and thus you will definitely want to munch on some Tacos!!! I like getting the MULITAS or BIRRIA tacos from this truck [Pete’s Crunchy Red hot Tacos]. Best Taco truck in Bk hands down!! IDGAF!!!
SUNDAY
OKay so now
It's Sunday. The Lord’s Day(?)
Let's relax a bit.
Head to the BEACH, LONG BEACH specifically! FUCK the ROCKAWAYS!!! So crowded yuck!
it's $15 to get on the beach (which is supposed to deter non locals i.e POC) **Smh, in your free time you should look up how Long island was created to be a safe haven for racists to escape from urban life. i.e WHITE FLIGHT* So because of this i LOVE going to this beach. Way less overcrowded, sushi nearby. food nearby. Arguably more parking spots. and you WONT run into one of your exes on this beach. Sooo def give it a whirl. Accessible via the Long Island Rail Road
OR:
if you like Manhattan though.. Here's a whole new set of plans. Stroll through Riverside Park! and propose to your loved one, or break up with them or discuss your newest plans for an App that you need a measly 7,000,000 for!
After all that though, whether you’re in Manhattan already or you’re at the beach you should end your weekend with a. bang at Alicia Keys' new broadway show entitled HELL'S KITCHEN. My best friend who happens to be a drummer in a few projects of mine, and who also will get an EGOT in like 3 years is the main chair drummer for this show! Jaylen Petinaud, also known as: Herbie Hancock’s Drummer!!!
Head on over to queens if you parked your car in a garage and want a little more interaction with some jazz before bed. Terraza 7’s Latin Jazz Jam is home to some of the best musicians on earth. Most Notably it’s host: John Benitez!! GO GO GO! i haven't been back in like 7 years since i thought i performed terribly during a jam :(
I'll be back though for sure!
And if you’re still in manhattan… Vanisha Gould’s Jam Session @ mezzrow will be an awesome way to end the night with some JAZZ.
AFTER SHOW plans:
AFTERWARDS MAKE SURE YOU GO HOME!!
Thanks to Sam for having me, i hope this list inspires you to at LEAST, come to the Anti 4th Jam im hosting at BAR hehehehehehehe omg heheheheh :”)

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
HAPPY B-DAY (blog day) to our fellow NYC music site, Scenes from the Underground, which turns 7 years old TODAY! Come out and give thanks to the brain behind the blog, Krystal McRae, at the SFTUG anniversary showcase NEXT FRIDAY (7/12), where Rogue Soul, Counterpart, Calendar Year and The Loneliers will all be hitting the Hart Bar stage to celebrate.
Get a tat, help a dog! Our friend Justin Buschardt of Sharkswimmer recently had to take his pup Kafka to the ER, which resulted — as one can expect — in approx a gazillion dollars in vet bills. To raise some cash to cover these surprise expenses, the musician/tattoo artist is currently offering a flash special, with an array of options available for $100-$300. Check out your options here and DM him to book.
NEW CLASSIFIEDS ARE UP! Last week, we let you know that Short Porch is seeking a drummer, and this week, we’ve got new ads from Tiers La Familia — a punk band looking for album artwork — and Reaux Cham Beaux, a rock band on the hunt for a bass player. As always, this year’s ads are available to view with details and contact info here.
Looking for studio space? Rubulad has a ground-level, soundproof studio (24/7 access) opening up for $750/month. Details here.
RELEASE RADAR
New(ish) stuff from local (+ occasionally, once-local) artists we love, listed in no particular order whatsoever:
“I’m Not Depressed I’ve Just Done All I Can” // Middle Youth
“The Whiskey Shake” // Jeremy and the Harlequins
THE SETLIST by Bands do BK is a reader-supported publication that’s freeeee. BUT! If you want to become a paid subscriber to show some love and support the work BdBK is doing… well, hey. That’d be pretty rad of you. <3
