6.24 A wknd w/ New Myths
The band on markets, Mortal Kombat and their Friday-night show at The Broadway
FOUR SCORE AND….k, it was actually just like five months ago, we were hyping up the Bands do BK 3-year anniversary celebration, featuring a beeeeeyooootiful bill that included Namesake, Wetsuit, Tilden and New Myths.
We were obscenely proud of this lineup, had commissioned an artist to make an actual flyer (instead of just googling “90s gifs” and slapping some text on top of a Seinfeld image) (standard protocol) and had even prepared an ~anniversary outfit~ for the occasion. That said, as was COVID custom, approx 99.9% of events were getting canceled in some capacity, so while we were exciiiiiiiiited, we were also very much waiting for the other Doc to drop.
Then the weekend arrived—
The good news: The bands were healthy!
The bad news: … Bomb cyclone?
“What the hell is a bomb cyclone?!” you might ask?
Not sure!
“That sounds made up!” you might say.
WE AGREE!
But we don’t make the rules, man; Mother Nature—and meteorologists with an apparent flair for the dramatic—do! And no matter what ya call this weather phenomenon, the end result was that our fave BK rock/new wave/pop power trio New Myths were stranded upstate and thus unable to play the show.
Now, life seldom gives you second chances (which is why we’ve given out phone #s to an obscene amount of hot bartenders) (and then proceeded to NEVER, EVER GO BACK TO THOSE BARS), but we’re v happy to report that this is the very rare occasion where the universe—at least as of 10:03 a.m. today—has decided to give us a second shot.
Enter: TONIGHT! New Myths will be bringing their powerful stage presence and killer chemistry, a lewk that’s part pop star, part Delias catalogue, and their signature brand of sparkly shredding (perfectly packaged for at-home listening via their 2021 EP All The Shiny Things) to The Broadway for a BdBK show that is also the EP release party for Hudson Valley-based band Monarch. and will feature the ~musical stylingz~ of Real Burn (their first show ever!) and Hollye Bynum of Razor Braids fame.
Life may give occasionally give you a second chance but don’t count on a third!!!!! Meet us at the show ~tonight~, and as for the rest o’ the wknd, you better believe that Brit, Marina and Rosie of New Myths have you covered—
Precisely 0% chance of a bomb cyclone this time, baby.
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
FRIDAY:
NEW MYTHS rises out of bed on Friday, realize they are incredibly hungry AND it’s finally sunny! So, the three ladies head over to a classic outdoor bar/food cart spot NOWADAYS in Bushwick to sit outside in the sun, grab a refreshing bloody mary and eat some next-level food cart tacos while listening to the scratchy scratchy of the local DJ on their turntables.
Later, after getting too much sun, and feeling even more dehydrated than they were before, they head over to one of their other favorite bars in Brooklyn, ALL NIGHT SKATE, to keep the party going and work in some Mortal Kombat II and NBA Jams.
Then finally, like a cherry on top of a fucking fabulous day, the best part is last. NEW MYTHS head over to their very own headlining show at THE BROADWAY and play with other super rad bands like Monarch who are from the Hudson Valley (and who are celebrating their EP release!) Also playing are Real Burn, and Hollye Byrnum & Friends (featuring members of bands like Razor Braids, Sloppy Jane, Miranda & The Beat, DI Ivories, Noble Beast & So and So!) The show will definitely entail dancing the night away and hugging all the beautiful people of the Brooklyn music scene along the way.
SATURDAY:
Waking up a bit hungover but super happy with their Friday, there is still more to do! Saturday, they head out to the QUEENS NIGHT MARKET in Corona, where you can get one of everything! So they will. They will absolutely get one of everything.
Then, once they've had one of everything, the trio jumps in a car and head over to JONES BEACH THEATRE to see Tears for Fears and Garbage! What other concert would NEW MYTHS go see together than this? It's almost like the creators of this tour were able to jump into their heads and figure out what would be NEW MYTHS dream concert for the summer. Well, they did it, and of COURSE they will be there. Oh yes. They will be there.
SUNDAY:
Sunday is NYC pride day!!!! Waking up with our ears blasted in the best way possible from the past two nights concerts, what better way to wake up and start the day then to head over to Ridgewood's WINDJAMMER and support local LGBTQA+ artists and makers at the PRIDE Artist & Makers Market! SO looking forward to exploring local art and supporting local artists.
Then, OF COURSE, NEW MYTHS will put on all our most colorful clothes and head over to the NYC PRIDE PARADE, dance their asses off, and celebrate pride month with their NYC family :).
After that, the ladies will most likely be STARVING, so they will head over to KOPOTIAM for the best Malaysian food of their lives and then most likely walk over to the handball court at SARAH D ROOSEVELT PARK to now legally :) smoke a joint and watch some exceptionally competitive handball.
WHAT A WEEKEND!!!!!
