5.19 A wknd w/ Ozzie
The drummer (InCircles, Shred Flintstone, Choked Up) and main brain behind Show Brain booking on park hangs, tattoos of his face and (one of) his band's Saturday-night show at EWEL
… and we thought we were busy.
Primarily, we’d like to take this newsletter introduction as an opportunity to introduce the brilliant brains behind a whole lotta operations—
A drummer, promoter, permit-fuckin-pro and master of oh-so-many musical ceremonies—
A gentleman! A scholar! A bird! A plane! The man! The myth! The dude in the photo (duh) above—
We’re talking, of course, about Ozzie.
(We just realized don’t, uh, actually know his last name. So let’s just consider it a Cher/Rihanna/Sting situation and assume, probably correctly, that you also know exactly who we’re talking about.)
There are few things we appreciate more than those people who aren’t just artists but organizers, who work just as hard off the stage as they do on it and who generously dedicate their personal time to facilitating a damn good time that we all are lucky enough to go out and enjoy. And along with drumming in three bands (InCircles, Shred Flintstone, Choked Up), Ozzie does just that as the mastermind behind Show Brain, which at a quick count is preparing to throw a whopping 16+ shows over the next several months—the bulk of which take place outdoors for the low, low ticket price of $000000.

Yeehaw! It’s gonna be a fun one. SEE YA OUT THERE XOXO
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
Hello hello hello! Happy Spring/happy almost summer! I meant to get this out to everyone sooner, but I've been knee-deep in organizing summer shows while juggling three bands and life! Thanks for coming here and checking out my suggestion of things to do, places to eat, and events to check out! I think it's only right I do a shameless plug and mention InCircles just put out a single! Czech it out! <3
Also, a special shout out to Sam for killing the game and being a positive driving force in the music community!
Without further ado, here's a recommendation of fun/cool things to do this weekend!
FRIDAY
Let's kick things off correctly by getting an after-work drink or bite to eat in Bushwick at the Tradesman. A quaint rustic pub with intricate wood decor offering microbrews and mixed drinks. They also have a weekend brunch menu… but we'll get back to that. If you prefer Manhattan, let's head over by Tompkins Sq Park, where I'll be hosting shows this summer, *sick plug alert!* with the next one being June 10th! Hit Niagara in the LES of E 7th Street. A longtime watering hole on a busy Alphabet City corner features DJ-spun tunes & a photo booth. Afterward, let's walk off the food and drinks to Washington Sq Park. There you'll find a slew of interesting vendors with unique items. If you're lucky, you'll come across a big group of buskers in a full assemble with blaring jams, covers, and originals by the big water fountain. Are you hungry? Did you eat yet? If not, let's hit up the Chelsea area and pay a visit to Coppelia. I highly recommend the Lomo Saltado. They are some mouth-watering cocktails…I could have one right now! I also recommend their crispy fish tacos.
Great staff and some excellent quality food. How about an alternative? How about a 2-for-1? A 2-fer. Head over to Bushwick and visit Our Wicked Lady, where you can eat some of Jazzy Renae's comfort food, drink more, and catch live music. That's actually a 3-fer! Go @getjrckd! Her food is on point! Tell the staff Ozzie sent ya!
You don't wanna miss Nuclear Family Fantasy that night. They'll share the stage with Slut Magic, Gordita Beach, and Riverwild. After that, have more rounds, make friends, visit the Greener Room, hit the sack, and start again tomorrow!
SATURDAY
Remember that brunch I mentioned? Yeah, let's head over to Tradesman to fuel up. Say hello to Papi Shiitake, a member of the Trash Casual records crew, who absolutely kills it on the grill and on the stage. Also, say hi to Lachlan behind the bar. Drummer extraordinaire and can make some killer cocktails. The drinks on my birthday were especially great. Thanks, bud! After that, let's have an excellent workout by taking a 20-minute walk to 18th Ward Brewing to catch a free outdoor concert hosted by New Colossus Fest! Say hi to Lio and Steven, who run New Colossus! Music from 1 to 6 PM! Once you've gotten your blood pumping from the groves, let's get fueled up by grabbing some tacos at Plaza Ortega in Bushwick. A family-owned spot that I've been visiting for years. I recommend their shrimp tacos and or salted beef burrito! Let's split each meal item with a friend. The price is right too! After that, take a nice walk to Maria Hernandez Park *sick plug alert!* where I'll be hosting some concerts this summer (next one, June 25th) to soak in whatever may be left of the sun! Grab a drink from Brooklyn Kava too! The night is just starting, so let's head to East Williamsburg Econolodge and RSVP on the BandNada site for $5! InCircles will be firing on all cylinders with Castle Black and a favorite of mine, Kissed By An Animal which features John F Daily, who runs EWEL! That guy is a legend!
SUNDAY
Let's skip breakfast and head straight to lunch. Can you tell I like eating? Break the fasting and hit up the famous Fedoroff's Roast Pork for their famous Philly cheesesteak near Greenpoint / Williamsburg. They also have a vegetarian option with Impossible meat. Tell them extra well done for a nice crispy texture :-P Let's dive into some history and visit the MTA Museum. Yeah, it's a trip away, but totally worth it if you haven't been. It's pretty crazy how our transit system was built over 100 years ago. It'll make you appreciate it more! Or go and get a tattoo of my face at Live By The Sword. Alternatively, if you want to stay in the Williamsburg area and get fast, cheap food, hit up the Birria Landia truck. Their Consome is a must-have side with whatever dish you go for. They won't disappoint… I think I'll start a food tour blog or something. If you want more music, Our Wicked Lady is doing a back-to-back with a daytime family rock concert by Rolie Polie Guacamole! However, if you prefer something heavier, head to TV Eye to see Red Tank!, my pals Nihiloceros, Comprador, and Oxer! Snag one of Nihiloceros' hot sauces and tell Mike and the gang I said wuzzup! Later in the evening, the gloves come off for Heat Death and Orange Peel Mystic at Our Wicked Lady for another rooftop show! While you're there, visit the Greener Room and tell Ruby and Sanie that Ozzie sent ya! It'll be a nice way to end the night!
