5.13 A wknd w/ 95 Bulls
The band on matching Sound of Music-inspired wardrobes, group grooming rituals and their show TONIGHT at Arlene's Grocery
HAPPY FRIDAY KIDS, ADULTS, SENIOR CITIZENS, AND ANY MIRACULOUSLY LITERATE BABIES WITH INTERNET ACCESS (+ IMPECCABLE TASTE IN NEWSLETTERS) ALIKE!
For the third week running, it appears, we’re featuring pandemic-born bands, and next up is 95 Bulls, our fave group of artists-not-athletes who were “conceived like a big angry baby” at Our Wicked Lady in 2020, and exploded onto the scene with their debut double-drop “Big Fight” + “Crazy,” which premiered on BdBK in October of that year.
A bona fide Brooklyn supergroup, the tune squad is comprised of members of Ashjesus, Bipolar, Jelly Kelly, Smock and The Mystery Lights, and it’s safe to say that there is no band that has more fun, whether kissing on stage, cruising around Brooklyn in kidz cars or, as we know from experience, hanging out in the Radio Free Brooklyn studio—
SPEAKING OF WHICH! Despite our advice (never, ever, listen back), we spent the morning revisiting the radio episode when they joined us in studio on February 7th and it was just the delightful, hilarious and absolutely ridiculous time we remembered.
Listen to the episode here to discover v important 95 Bulls trivia such as:
The actual Chicago Bulls player that once put Emily on his shoulders at a Benihana
The Disney prince Zach Inkley’s dad (and Zach Inkley’s dad’s beard) played on Broadway
The member that’s basically Boss Baby, the one that’s the ~cool~ babysitter, the one with big stepdad energy, the one who resembles the owls in Harry Potter and the one that’s the band’s football captain equivalent
The company that would sponsor their (fictional) (probably?) basketball team
+ More useless info + sports (?) talk + questionable medical advise + general mayhem!
Oh, and a whole lotta fart noises.
Anyway, good times. AND SPEAKING OF GOOD TIMES! This Friday the 13th defies all odds by in fact being your ~lucky~ day, because tonight you have the chance to catch 95 Bulls LIVE at Arlene’s Grocery for Venus Twins’ single-release show with Cronies and Chic Fads, brought 2 you by Bloodless Management. (Grab your tix here!)
Asssss forrrrrrrr theeeeee restoftheweekend, the band o’ Bulls provided an itinerary that kinda spans… all summer? So consider your plans covered, at least on the music front—including one show celebrating their forthcoming record (!) GO HOME —through June. And to fill out and fill up the next three days, we’ve also got a creative selection of evergreen suggestions from the band that includes wake-and-baked-goods and casual Sundays spent enjoying America’s redneck past time.
Are they serious? Are they joking? No way to know, but READ ON + GAME ON, BABY!
Hope your weekend’s real nice. You deserve it. <3
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
FRIDAY
Dawn- The morning light trickles in thru the cigarette-punctured IKEA curtains. The soft chants of “T G I F” are heard echoing in the kitchen. Thru clouds of smoke Dom Bodo appears removing burnt cinnamon buns from the oven, joint hanging from his lip. One by one, they all appear from their respective bedrooms: Emily, Kayla, Inkley and Buttz (same room, bunk beds). They enjoy a meal, family-style. Buttz gives his bun to the pitbull (Buster) lying at his feet. Once everyone is out of their jammies they get into their play clothes (made from access IKEA Drapery, IE Sound of Music). Friday means Grocery Shopping. They head to Arlene’s Grocery (tonight at 7) to be loud and shop for milk and memories with Venus Twins, Cronies, and Chic Fads. After that they split to their shifts at The Broadway, Our Wicked Lady, and TV Eye (Emily is a pediatrician/organ donor so straight to bed). While asleep they all dream of a hard and fast night at BK Made (May 27th) with The Wilful Boys, C.O.F.F.I.N., and Pyrex.
SATURDAY
Coffee at Cafe Moca in Ridgewood. Buttz likes a Dirty Chai with real soil. Then it’s time for an outdoor tour. Hitting Rippers for sand and snacks (June 4th with Oenida), Tompkins Square Park (June 11), big ole Bryant Park (June 25th) and finally a homey return to Jonathan Toubin’s Soul Scream (Our Wicked Lady June 26). After all the fresh air, sun, and telling Inkley to stop putting his mouth against the public water fountain, Emily lathers her sickly complexion in aloe vera and everyone passes out by 6 pm. They arise again at 8 because they forgot to release their record GO HOME at Elsewhere (on June 18th).
SUNDAY
Sunday is for the boys. Nascar is Dom’s Church. Everyone takes turns brushing sections of Kayla’s mermaid hair. Lunch at Anchored Inn and then they walk over to Trans-Pecos to water the foliage on the back patio (25 bucks that they put in the Taco Bell Jar).
Itinerary above provided by 95 Bulls. Follow the band at @95bullsnyc, add their songs to your Spotify playlists and find everything 95 Bulls at 95bullsnyc.com.
