4.7 A wknd w/ Sara Devoe
The artist on "Bad Romance," suspiciously cheap lox, and Sunday's Bands do BK brunch at Arlene's Grocery
ARE YOU READY FOR A REVOLUTION?! For TOO LONG has brunch revolved around FOOD. To which we say: OLD NEWS, PEOPLE.
It’s time to trade:
Lox for vox!
Pancakes for percussion!
Hashbrowns for harmonies!
Bacon for bass!
Grits for guitar!
Oatmeal for… uh, we’re honestly running out of steam here. And if you think oatmeal is an appropriate brunch item, well, we might have a bigger problem on our hands…
ANYWAY! This Sunday, escape your one night stand, gather your girlfrandz and gather around to satisfy your APPETITE FOR ART at BANDS DO BK BRUNCH: a three-course dish ft. tasty tunes from Telescope Club (a side project of BdBK BFF Khaya of Moon Kissed!), Caitlin Starr and this week’s SETLIST server-upper, the one and only Sara Devoe!
Bottomless mimusic from 1:30-5!
An independent musician out of Albany, Sara is relatively new to the performance game. The artist was born with a limb deformity on her left hand that kept her from learning guitar for most of her life, and while she had a passion for music, she didn’t pursue making it until the pandemic found her holed up in her childhood bedroom, where started writing and producing “Harsh.” Luckily for us, she’s since escaped, and after graduating from college at SUNY Geneseo, Sara moved to New York City in 2021, where she played her first-ever show at Piano’s—
And now, from our perch right around the corner at Arlene’s Grocery, we’re stoked to welcome her back to the stage to headline a food-less but tune-full brunch (you can still have drinks) THIS SUNDAY.
As a wise man once said, if music be the food of love, PLAY ON! And while we don’t exactly know what that means, well, we’re sure you get the point.

FRIDAY
Woo! Fridays are my favorite day of the week because it’s the end of the work week and I get to catch up with my friends I’ve been missing from that week! The night usually starts with dinner, and one of my favorite dinner spots (specifically for oysters and happy hour wine deals) is The Ten Bells in Bushwick. My bassist Allison actually has an Instagram account (@_oysterrates) where she posts reviews on oysters in New York City. After Dinner, I’m probably going to The Johnsons in Bushwick for great drinks and good music, and then ending the night at Cobra Club for the best karaoke of my life until 3 AM. My Karaoke song is “Bad Romance” by Lady Gaga.
SATURDAY
Saturdays can be tricky, because lately it’s been my day to rest. If I wake up at a reasonable hour, I head to the deli across the street from my apartment on Bushwick Ave. called Salt and Pepper Grill for a $5 lox bagel. I know that sounds sketchy but it’s the best lox bagel I’ve ever had in my life. After that, I’m probably heading out with my roommate to go shopping. Usually we go to the shopping strip on Bedford Ave and I’m definitely hitting up Buffalo Exchange. Dinner on a Saturday is various, but another one of my favorite spots now in Brooklyn for Mexican is Calexico. They have the best guacamole. For a fun Saturday night, I’m probably meeting up with friends at Twins Lounge. My friend Bia showed me this place, and I love it because they have pool and a photobooth (I am terrible at pool).
SUNDAY
Show day!!!!! I’m sleeping in, and it’s usually a bacon egg and cheese today from Salt & Pepper. Honestly I don’t know many good brunch spots in Bushwick, so I’ll have to stay on the lookout. Now that it’s getting warmer, Sundays are usually for doing things outside. BUT since it’s a BRUNCH SHOW, I’m probably getting as much rest as I can and then heading to Arlene’s to play a show with Caitlin Starr and Telescope Club. Arlene’s is one of my favorite venues to play because the sound is incredible and I always have a great crowd to support me. Hopefully mimosas will be available at this show. After the show, it’s a tradition for my roommate and I to take a long hike to Nina’s Great Burrito in the Upper West Side for the best Mexican food we’ve had in the city.
Be sure to follow me on spotify and Instagram to stay updated with what I’m up to 😊 See you at Arlene’s this Sunday!

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
If you tried to buy a ticket to the aforementioned BdBK brunch - THANK YOU! Also: WE’RE SORRY! The Arlene’s Grocery site has been down recently so (currently) you unfortunately can’t snag one in advance. That said, there are always tix at the door, baby! If you don’t have cash, Sam’s (my) parents will be there, so hey, maybe just try and hassle them for some? (That’s what I’ve been doing for 34.5 years!)
It’s that time of the month: BANDCAMP FRIDAY has once again arrived, meaning the site is waiving fees ‘til the clock strikes midnight and all our favorite artists turn into hopefully-less-poor pumpkins. Go forth, buy music/merch and support your friendly neighborhood musicians <3
In new New Colossus news, this year the fest’s Summer Sundays are transforming into SUMMER SATURDAYS—free shows every weekend from May to September at 18th Ward Brewing (including two curated by BdBK: 5/13 and 9/16). THAT SAID! The first one is an exception—and a special occasion: Lio’s bday bash is taking place May 7 and features Punchlove, Tallies, Diary, Colatura and Country Mouse. ALSO RELEVANT! On April 11, badges for the March 2024 fest will go on sale AND applications for artists to play will officially open. Follow the fest for updates.
Annnnd speaking of NC! Only took us a month, but our interview with London/Brighton-based punk band Noah and the Loners (who fall under the local umbrella bc they were here for a week and also we just like them a lot) is liiiive. “This is what Gen Z sounds like” is the declaration on their website. This is what a millennial has to say about it here.
CLASSIFIEDS have been updated once again! Latest and greatest:: Cellophane Kiss and Means/Ways are two acts looking for a drummer and Sabine Kearley is an aternative indie/ psychedelic-pop singer and pianist hoping to join a band or form one. Don’t h8, collabor8, right here.
