4.5 A wknd w/ The Frame
The band on milkshakes, main-character energy and their show THIS SUNDAY at Arlene's Grocery
HAPPY EARTHQUAKE DAY!!! Was using the bathroom at the Brooklyn Public Library at the time (life hack), and pleased to vouch for the structural integrity of that particular building. No notes.
NOW! Onto the weekend, where once again (we don’t do this often!), we’re going to have to ask you to embark on the concert equivalent of a trust fall… the show version of asking a stranger to watch your laptop at a coffee shop … a musical action akin to finding a roommate on Craigslist… an event TANTAMOUNT to a Friday-night TINDER DATE.
We’re talking, of course, about going to see a band… who doesn’t yet have any music online.
That band would be The Frame. And you’re just going to have to take our (very wise) word for it.
A brief intro via band bio:
“When the Rocky Mountains met the City of Angels at Boston Conservatory, recent graduates Josephine Glass and Gable Kinsman actually didn’t know that the next iteration of their musical lives would collide in New York City. Mixing their love of shared influences like Fleetwood Mac, George Harrison, The Eagles and Heart, The Frame, is Josephine and Gable's first professional collaboration.“
A secondary intro via our own IRL experience:
We first caught The Frame in January when they opened for Sample Size (Jimmy Brewer of Pan Arcadia’s project) at Mercury Lounge and were immediately impressed by the massive stage presence of Josephine Glass, who not only exhibited the energy of a pro athlete on adderall, running around the room flowy-dressed and barefoot a la Florence Welch, but also an envy-inspiring amount of confidence (that of, say, a drag queen… maybe also on adderall?!), cultivating a just-short-of-uncomfortable amount of intimacy through individual attention and artfully seductive eye contact that made it feel like the artist was singing directly to you and for you (even as you watched her generously bestow that glow on every fan that gathered to form the circle around her in the room).
All to say, it was a very good show from a very new group, and you have the opportunity this weekend to not just jump on but help build this BANDwagon as a founding member of The Frame fan club. And it all starts with attending their next show THIS SUNDAY at Arlene’s Grocery.
Check out a small sample of what to expect from The Frame via this video, then scroll on for a wknd from the duo that is def destined to delight.
Go forth, have fun, be safe and — dun dun dun — watch out for those aftershocks…
Welcome to Nostalgia, Fuckers.
We have now reached the end of another week in New York City, and it’s time to party.
Here’s the ultimate The Frame approved weekend for y’all. Check this out.
FRIDAY
It’s 6PM on your Friday night, and the first pit stop you’re gonna make to pregame the evening is at Hartley’s in Clinton Hill, Bed-Stuy Area. Don’t be fooled by the plethora of neighborhood strollers, this cozy/intimate pub is packed to the brim with some of the hottest New Yorkers you have seen to date. Like to flirt? Love a draft? Wanna get lucky? Hartley’s is the place to be. But of course, you can’t stay long because you’re going to catch your favorite 90s band parading around again in all their former glory at 8PM at the newly renovated Brooklyn Paramount Theater. So, before you leave, make sure to get that person's phone number and thank/tip your local bartender!
Upon arrival at the theater, you would think you’re at Caesars Palace in Vegas. Situated all around the venue are greek statues, emerald blue ceilings and impeccable mood lighting.
And, if Vegas is your first thought…you know YOU did good at Hartley’s ;)
The show's about to begin and you need another round of drinks so you get some gin and tonics and distribute them amongst the group. Finally you wedge your way through the crowd and find yourselves in the middle of the venue. You dance, laugh, cry, dream and hold your friends. You feel as young as you know you are, you are here, and you are free. These are the memories worth making and holding onto, people. Stay present and be happy with this iteration of your life. You’re never gonna get it back!
The show is over and it fucking rocked. But before you can go to that after party with all your friends, you need a burger. Oh, and definitely an Oreo milkshake. Thankfully, across the street is a Junior’s so you’re taken care of. The service is fast and the people are kind, so you’re in and out within thirty.
It’s after midnight and you’re now on the fire escape of one of your co-workers' apartments. Over a cigarette and Cowboy Carter, you debate whether the moon you’re witnessing is in its waning or gibbous phase. After another hour or so, you say your goodbyes and head out the door. Now alone, you nightcap the evening with your favorite playlist in your ear as you train it back to the city and lay the day to rest.
SATURDAY
Now, If you were smart, you either drank enough water or took a motrin before going to bed last night to avoid this Saturday morning hangover. Regardless of your choices though, you are wearing sunglasses come rain or shine this AM.
Now let us read your mind…
Coffee.
Definitely that.
You obviously need a coffee so, you’re gonna roll out of bed, walk to the L train and take it to Williamsburg, so you can pop by Oslo Coffee Roasters for a red eye, pastry, and tea. Coincidentally, not too far from coffee is Seven Wonders, the perfect vintage store to take you back to the 70s, and let you live in your Daisy Jones and The Six delusion. Spring is upon us and you need a few new pieces to add to your summer wardrobe!
After an hour or so walking up and down Bedford and Grand, you make your way to the water and find yourself at Domino Park. In a perfect world, it is a warm, bright and sunny day and you’re LIVING your main character fantasy. You sit down on a bench and take notice of all the people walking their dogs, joggers, couples holding hands, volleyball games and human joy galore. The view of the Manhattan skyline is breathtaking and you cannot get enough of this beautiful day.
Inspired by all the poetry that is living and breathing all around you, you decide you need a new book so, you train it back to the city and hit up McNally Jackson on Prince Street in SoHo. Whether you find yourself drifting towards the sage and immortal words of Rilke, reminiscent of some old classics from The Lyrics by Paul McCartney, or need a promiscuous Wattpad FanFic, the atmosphere at McNally’s offers a safe escape to your favorite literary worlds. And if you are having a hard time deciding what you wanna take home, there are numerous seats scattered around the store just waiting for you to sit down and welcome you to your next story.
SUNDAY
While it might be the end of the weekend, there is certainly much more to be accomplished and not a moment to waste.
With that said, we suggest heading back to Brooklyn to take a mid morning yoga class at Baby Cobra to ground and set your intentions for the rest of the week. Baby Cobra is walk-ins ONLY (pay venmo or however at the door) and is open to all levels so, enjoy your morning flow and don’t stress!
After class, you will certainly need something hydrating, nourishing and…groceries! What better place to kill all birds with one stone than the Union Square Market! Situated right at 14th Street, this weekly Sunday market is the perfect place to check out and support new/local vendors, get your groceries, eat yummy food, and absorb the smell and color of tulips, hydrangeas, and so much more. Though petite, it’s hard to not want to stop at every table and get lost in the market for hours.
Suddenly, it’s 3PM and you realize the day has flown by and you need to go home and relax before you go see this new up-and-coming band called The Frame at Arlene’s Grocery! So, what do you do? Power nap, face mask and watch old reruns of your favorite tv show till it’s time to go. Maybe sneak in a yummy homemade meal, or if you’re in the mood, doordash some Cava? It’s up to you!
Now you’re off to Arlene’s Grocery and the night is stacked with some of the hottest and coolest bands in New York. The show kicks off with the sonic waves of Nostranders, followed by the heartbeat that is Summer Fling, we then make a spellbinding turn into the magical music and lyricism of THE FRAME, and last, but certainly not the least, the incomparable and legendary Sample Size grace the stage and end the night with a bang.
The bill was incredible and you can’t get enough so, you decide to continue the high with a delicious pizza and glass of wine at Lil Frankies in the East Village. You invite everyone you know who’s there and definitely those new friends you made gushing over Sample Size’s very own Jimmy Brewer. But before you go, a picture perfect photo is taken of the whole gang to remember the evening by. Everybody laughs, shares a hug, and says their goodbyes. Another memory in the photo album. Another song we shared. Another marvelous evening in the city that never sleeps.
