3.7 A wknd w/ SUNHILL
The Swedish band on Manhattan sightseeing, Brooklyn pub-crawling and the BdBK x New Colossus showcase TONIGHT at Arlene's Grocery
HAPPY FRIDAY!
Feet are sore! Hearts are full! Ears are ringing! And we are somehow (but thank god!) barely halfway through the best week of the year: NEW COLOSSUS FEST — aka the total takeover of LES venues by 150 artists from down the block, across the country, over the border and the other side of the actual ocean.
The only good part about the fest being halfway over is that it means there is still so, so much to go! So if you missed the memo, don’t worry — you didn’t miss the boat. You still have plenty of time to get that ass in gear and go see a whole lot of amazing bands who have taken planes, trains and automobiles to grace us with their presence and their art on some v sweet stages right here in NYC.
Unsure where to start? The full schedule is avail on the site, but we’ve already got you covered for tonight with the fourth annual BdBK x New Colossus Fest showcase — 6 PM (really — the first band starts at 6:15) at Arlene’s Grocery!
The lineup is, as always, a mix of local and international acts we love: Personal Trainer & Cloudsurfers (both Netherlands) + Them Flying Monkeys (Portugal) + NYC’s own Consumables & Talon & Panik Flower + most importantly, your SETLIST stars—
All the way from Gothenburg, plz give it up for “your mother's favourite band,” Sweden’s own SUNHILL!
Get a vibe for SUNHILL via the music vid above (less wet IRL), then read on to find out exactly what these Swedies have planned for their first time in NYC —
Oh, and maybe be a doll and slide into those DMs to hit ‘em with some recs. Have a great wknd! <3
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
This will be the first time any of us in SUNHILL visit the Big Apple—actually, the first time any of us visit the U.S. at all. So here’s a tourist-y weekend recommendation from a band of Swedes about to learn the hard way how big NYC really is.
FRIDAY
During the day, we’ll meet up with Telos Vision, who are also from Gothenburg, to exchange some gear since we’re renting it together. This, of course, is all in preparation for the most important part of the day - our second show at The New Colossus Festival, taking place at Arlene’s Grocery. Apparently, it’s one of the first live music venues on the Lower East Side, which is pretty cool.
The night is hosted by Bands do BK, and we’ll be sharing the stage with some amazing bands: Personal Trainer, CONSUMABLES, Talon, Cloudsurfers, Them Flying Monkeys, and PANIK FLOWER. We’re kicking things off at 6:15 PM - you know where to be!
SATURDAY
We’ll probably wake up a bit too late (well deserved) and then head to the nearest breakfast spot. Caffeine is much needed, and we got a recommendation for Caffe Vita (thanks, Steven!) which is really close to where we’re staying.
The plan is to start in the southern part of Manhattan and make our way north, checking off as many must-sees as possible. Can we do it all on foot? Maybe. This includes obligatory photos at Times Square, a peek from Rockefeller Center, looking up at the Empire State Building, and of course a stroll through Central Park. Somewhere along the way, we’ll squeeze in some classic New York pizza (we’ve had recommendations for Essex Pizza, Lombardi’s Pizza, and Prince Street Pizza).
After all of that, we’ll crash at our hostel to regain some energy for our final night. The plan? Head to Williamsburg for a pub crawl, hopefully ending up at at least one speakeasy (please share recommendations in DMs, thanks).
SUNDAY
We’ll wake up, more energized than ever, to check out of our hostel. This is the day when we might split up in different directions.
Simon is determined to ride a bike through New York — preferably alone, for some reason. The rest of us aren’t as brave. Oscar really wants to get a close-up view of the Statue of Liberty, but some of us might be happy just saying hi from a distance. Henric and I wanted to go on the Walk on the Wild Side tour, but it looks like it’s sold out, so we’ll check out some historical music spots instead - like CBGB’s, Radio City Music Hall etc. Unfortunately, when the evening comes, it’s time to head to JFK and catch our flight back to Sweden -- where studio recordings for our upcoming songs await. But this won’t be our last time in NYC — see you again soon!
