3.28 A wknd w/ ADMIN
The band on brunchtime movies, 24-hour pho and their show TONIGHT at Main Drag Music
Brooklyn band ADMIN deals in “noise made by commuters and computers” —
But we’re not talking ~Stand clear of the closing doors~.
Made up of members from local bands including Monograms, Grim Streaker and Balaclava, ADMIN is a bona fide BK supergroup cranking out music as electrifying as the third rail—
Tunes that, if you’re not careful, might have you dancing your way right off the subway platform.
The latest of these songs—and the band’s third release—is “Club Next Door,” a track inspired by a true story that took place (where else) but right here in Brooklyn.
“We had a friend who lived next to this late night dance club in Bushwick, which I also think was a barbershop during the day until it transformed around midnight,” says ADMIN’s Ian Jacobs (vox/synth). “Our friend would come home and the walls would be shaking and the floors would be pulsating as they were trying to sleep. And I just thought it was such a great metaphor for how this city can buzz so loud and heavy that it doesn’t allow you to rest. Fun is usually the objective, or the culprit, and that just takes precedence over everything including any break you might try to get from the noise the city makes. We also all live in such close quarters one person’s fun is another person’s sound-quake.”
Quake n bake, baby!
ADMIN’s debut EP SYSTEMS drops April 25th, and in the meantime, you can catch them live TONIGHT with Frida Kill, Wife Knife and Firstsex at Main Drag Music.
GRAB YOUR TIX HERE! Then read on for more wknd plans kindly provided by the band, featuring ferries, pho and the Brooklyn bar that they might just be moving into one day…
Have a really great weekend <3
[BUT FIRST: PRESS PLAY]
FRIDAY
It's Friday night. You're hungry. You're thirsty. You're ready. Start your engine by getting off at the Bedford L and hitting up Super Burrito. Grab one of their top-notch burritos (chef's kiss). Get it in your system either inside or on the go, cause you're busy and you have places to be. Next up, walk a few blocks over to S1 cause we suggest you come to OUR SHOW, how could we not. The bill is stacked with Firstsex, Frida Kill and Wifeknife. And it's at Main Drag Music. The venue is truly awesome, and in between sets you can go back upstairs and look and dream about all the incredible synths and other gear in their showroom that you wanna buy when you get your next paycheck. Now that the show is over we need a good after-party spot, we're thinking 320 Club (in the back of Super Burrito where it all started). Sound good? Cool, see you there.
SATURDAY
After a long, fun night, you might be moving a little slow and need some fuel. Julia's in Ridgewood is a great spot for some brunch. The food/drinks are awesome. Order anything, it’s good. Then there’s an Other People’s Clothes on Woodward around the corner. If you feel like looking around, I would probably stop in for a few minutes to see if the ultimate vintage sports windbreaker that I've been searching for all my life catches my eye. If not, I quickly head over to grab a cocktail around the corner at Cassette (FKA Sundown Bar). I’d probably get a sipper with some friends before I hop on the train and meet some folks over at a few favorite bars in the Grand St area, Ontario Bar or Blinky's come to mind. Both great spots and highly recommended, especially the pool table at Ontario or the backyard at Blinky’s. After a couple hours, dinner might come in handy. We got you: Mama Pho (the real reason we came over to this neighborhood). Grab a Ban Mi or Pho. Quick, crazy-good and open 24 hours. After dinner the best thing you can do is find a show to go to. Depending on the weekend you should hit up Alphaville? Our Wicked Lady? Sultan Room? TV Eye? All of them in the same night!? But yea: go see live music and support all your friends and bands forever and ever. Late night we should stay out in the Bushwick area cause no excursion from ADMIN would be complete without a trip to Honore Club. We try to be there as much as possible. We’re negotiating if we can move in or not. The playlist is always super solid and the backyard has heaters, so we’d be set for life.
SUNDAY
What's better than going to Nitehawk for the weekend brunch movie? Nothing, that's what. Head over to the Nitehawk theater in W'burg and see whatever great vintage print they are screening for their 11am movie. And yes you can order food during the movie, and yes the tater tots come with queso, and yes that is as good as it sounds. Sometimes they also have a morning cereal bar out for the 11am movie if you wanna go that route instead. I’m partial to Honey Combs but it’s really dealer's choice. Next up, I've said it before and I'll say it again: The best-kept secret (if it's still even a secret anymore?) is riding the NYC Ferry. It's super cheap and fun. Grab the East River line from the N6 stop, a short walk from Nitehawk, and get out on the water for some sick views and either some headphone time or some significant-other time. Also, if I can, and if weather allows (might have to save this move for the summer), I try to take it all the way out to Rockaway Beach. If you do make it out there to Rockaway for a golden-hour stroll on the boardwalk, definitely get yourself to Rippers for some beers, burgers and bands. All of these things are ADMIN approved.
