2.7 A wknd w/ Phantom Signals
The band on bridge runs, Burp Castle and Captured Howls—a show, photo exhibit and fundraiser FOR Our Wicked Lady & AT Our Wicked Lady SUNDAY AFTERNOON
ANOTHER FRIDAY, ANOTHER FUNDRAISER — and, duh, moremoremore sweetsweet tunes.
As part of our community’s ongoing quest to save OWL (we did in fact get that tattoo last weekend #OWLTHX), we’d like to point your live-music-loving eyes/ears/attention in the direction of Captured Howls Fest—a photo exhibit (40+ photos from 16 local photographers!) + show (6 bands!) + fundraiser (all proceeds from both are being donated!) FOR Our Wicked Lady & AT Our Wicked Lady happening THIS SUNDAY… AFTERNOON!
So no bitching about your bedtime, mmk?
Captured Howls is a community-organized event led by Phantom Signals (BK purveyors of ~diy alt indie shoegaze prog rock~) drummer John. In promoting the show, the drummer—and photographer—shared a post explaining what Our Wicked Lady means to him:
“This is September 22 2022, the day I knew I HAD to find a band in Brooklyn. I was at @ourwickedlady at the @bandsdobk book launch. I’d seen so many shows, but on THIS day, the community was inclusive, welcoming and having the time of their lives. I felt part of this, I didn’t have a drum kit but @jbuschardt was like “you just need sticks”. Within months I joined Mel’s project @phantom_signals and one BandNada Band Lotto later we had a band.
Our Wicked Lady has countless stories like this, of others finding their path and their people. That’s why the outpouring of love for SAVE OWL doesn’t stop.”
And that’s why our outpouring of love for SAVE OWL won’t either.
Remember: You can still donate to the Our Wicked Lady Gofundme here to help our favorite venue keep its doors open.
NOW! Catch a sample of live Phantom Signals…
Then read on for a three-day NYC itinerary crafted by the band.
Have a great weekend! We love you very very very much.

FRIDAY
Friday is finally here (thank god), and we’re ready, hungry, and unleashed in Greenpoint. First up is A bar, followed by THE best Paulie Gee’s Slice Shop. The Freddy Prinze is absolute key, best slice they have hands down, AND they have a vegan version *chefs kiss*. After, we’ll head down to Moonlight Mile for (free!) jukebox jams and (ridiculously enjoyable) whiskey cocktails - Mike’s fav. Lots of bouncing around but these are too good to miss.
Are we ready for something loud - clearly - we’ll crosstown to OWL to catch AVSE fighting off the competition in Winter Madness and most likely discover our new favorite hooks (& please tell me they have arepas tonight…. soooooo good).
SATURDAY
We could sleep or we could RUN OVER A PINK BRIDGE. Night-Owl-Mike is slumbering, but a keen observer will see figures of me, Joey and John transcending the Willy B for a (mad) winter run. Joey’s training for a marathon right now, John’s ran his fair share in the past, and I just ran New York in November so you could say we're an *active* group.
After enduring absolutely brick temperatures, we’ll warm up with a Paloma coffee, get ready, link with Mike and head into town to see the Guerilla Girls exhibit at Hannah Traore.
After the exhibit, we'll swing by Kingston Hall for a drink. It's one of my winter East Village staples because of their two-for-one happy hour and insanely cozy fireplace, and it's the perfect place to go to before watching I’m Still Here at Angelika Film Center. After the movie, we’ll mosey over to Burp Castle, which is honestly one of my favorite places ever to get a drink and catch up AND enjoy peace and quiet at the same time. And the classical music and Belgian beer actually slaps.
SUNDAY
Sunday morning means breakfast at sunrise/sunset in bushwick. My recs: French toast or the biscuits and mushroom gravy. We’re actually playing a day show Sunday, so we'll head to OWL to setup Captured Howls Fest. This one is a special one - it was John’s idea (go John!!) and it’s a community fundraiser to SAVE OWL that Stefon says has EVERYTHING. 6 bands, music photography exhibition and print sale. The show is bringing together and celebrating local music photographers who have been documenting the diy music community around Our Wicked Lady for years, and all proceeds from the event will go towards ensuring OWL can keep its doors open. We’ll be playing alongside Beeyotch, Joyce, Castle Black, Sharkswimmer, Nihiloceros and DJ Whateverrrr (of Nevva). After a busy day, we’ll end the night at Anchored Inn, where we’ll each order a veggie burger and a beer cause their veggie burger is THE best, hands down, full stop. And we'll definitely run into another band, cause, well, it's Anchored Inn.

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
THANK YOU to everyone who came out or tuned in to Strong Little Songs on Tuesday and to AVATAREDEN, Grape Wayne, Wolf Van Elfmand and our co-host with the most Arlo Indigo for playing. With donations and matching, together we raised $380 for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, which is currently raising money to support artists affected by the LA fires. If you’d still like to donate, you can do that directly here.
More on the Music x CA Wildfire Relief Front: A different Bandcamp Friday of sorts. Today Bandcamp is donating 100% of their proceeds to MusiCares, an org providing emergency financial aid, mental health support and essential health services to artists in need. No better time to buy some music/merch to simultaneously support your fave bands + the other musicians who need in most. <3
Our Wicked Lady’s WINTER MADNESS—a month-long, Sweet 16-style battle of the bands—kicks off TONIGHT w/ A Very Special Episode (who have been training vigorously) vs. Mars Ray & the Raptures and Couvo vs. Friendly Company. And tomorrow, it’s Summer Fling vs. Caitlin Starr and Thomas Simon Vortex vs. Go Home. The madness continues all month. Grab tix — a great way to support the venue and the bands — here.
ICYMI, fresh off the release of their new single, ”Weird Recordings (you’ve got some),” we’ve got THE RIDER from Two-Man Giant Squid — a Top 10 ft. Twisted Teas, bassist jokes, Monet and more! Read it here.
Our pals CLOUDSURFERS are coming in from The Netherlands to play New Colossus Festival and are looking for a place to stay! If you can house 5 Dutch rockers from 3/5 - 3/10 (or a few of those nights), please let us know and we’ll connect you. Good karma (+ good music) awaits!
And, as a reminder, New Colossus Fest badges are on sale now.
