2.18 A wknd w/ Venus Twins
The BK/TX bass-and-drums duo on vegan grub, sneaking into symphonies and pre-gaming for their Tuesday-night show at The Broadway
Have your ear plugs handy? Good. Put ‘em in.
Now. Turn to the person next to you. Say hello. And then steal theirs. Because trust us, you’re gonna need at least two pairs for this one.
In music-descriptions-we-wish-we-wrote news, blog Fuzzy Sun once dubbed Venus Twins’ tunes “sonic mindfuckery” and a “brutal assault to the ears,” and as we expect you to attend the BK/Denton, TX (classic combo!) bass-and-drums duo’s show on Tuesday (2/22) at The Broadway, we’re here to do our parental duty, promote safe sound and ensure you use the proper protection.
SO! Now that our responsibility box has been thoroughly checked and we’ve all added another day to our collective cochlea warranty plans before inevitably succumbing to our Sound of Metal-style fates, a word on the weekend. In perfect punk fashion, the Venus Twins are vegan twins—a shared philosophy reflected in the themes on their 2020 album Eat Your Dogs as well as “Meat is Murder” merch—and for this weekend itinerary, the literal band of brothers is serving up some rad recs for v good vegan grub at a few of the local spots they love. In addition, the duo threw in some cute lil opps to catch a bit o’ culture, including a trip to the library to get lit and some sweet, sweet symphony action. (Important note: Per the punk pair’s instructions, you must sneak into said symphony. Rules are rules! Even when they’re rules about, uh, breaking rules.)
And finally, before you move onto your plans for Friday/Saturday/Sunday c/o Jake and Matt Derting, we cordially invite you to get HYPED AS HELL for Tuesday’s show via the music video for “Veins,” an 80-second, Sin City-inspired fun-size flick in which the artists pick up a hitchhiking vampire played by their younger (fake-) blood-soaked brother and the expected amount of insanity ensues.
Now! READ ON for what’s set to be a super sick weekend courtesy of our second favorite pair of twins (tho admittedly they do rock a little bit harder than Mary Kate and Ashley).
It all startsssssssssssssssssssssss NOW! Go forth, have fun, and maybe consider grabbing a third pair of plugs. We’ll see ya out there~

MORNING ANNOUNCEMENTS
HUGE THANK YOU to Ok Cowgirl, Drive-In, Omer Leibovitz and our co-organizer Arlo Indigo + everyone who came out to the second STRONG LITTLE SONGS living-room fundraiser show for Sweet Relief Musicians Fund! Fun was had, awkward jokes ‘bout dads were made, and between on-site and online donations, we raised $280, which—with BdBK matching $100 of that—makes for a total of $380 going to a very, very good cause. Stay tuned for the next one <3
A similar shoutout to the artists who participated in BAND LOTTERY 2022 last weekend and, of course, to BdBK BFF Jon Daily for organizing what was an incredibly fun and inspiring event. 39 artists showed up Saturday morning with hangovers + without egos to randomly form nine new bands, write a set in eight hours and perform their first and (probably) last shows that night at East Williamsburg Econo Lodge. Say hello and (likely) goodbye to BK’s newest + hottest bands: Disco 45, No Fries! :(, R U Sure?, How Are The Boys?, Were Drunk, Real Linoleum, Gwyneth, F’KKT and Wrong Together. Check out some clips here.
Speaking of Jon Daily, a word from the patron saint of EWEL himself on the streaming platform, online music community and local event hub bandNada: “Create your events on bandNada! The Brooklyn show-going community is on bandNada - so get your events in front of them there. It's the best way to promote your event and get people to actually show up at your show. bandNada will notify all your RSVP's when the event is coming up, so you don't have to. Post pics and videos from the show directly to the event so it has an online home. bandNada is our community platform, so it is completely free to use, and totally devoid of corporations and advertising (you can even own it yourself). If you're still not sure, just ask these guys.”
Big ups to BODEGA, who just released Statuette On The Console, a 10-track EP that features the same song in 10 different languages thanks to what the band calls “a village of doers.” We only know how to say holy shit! in one language, but wow… damn… you get the idea.
Once again, we are reminding you that BDBK IS HITTING SXSW! If you’re going down for the fest, plz send details on any shows you’re playing so we can promote, show up to support and basically do the same thing we do every weekend up here but just, ya know, down there.
