The artist on superhero supplies, secret fish-market record shops and the Our Wicked Lady benefit fest this Saturday AND Sunday at OWL
HAPPY FRIDAY —
And HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO BANDS DO BK (nothing cooler than well-wishing yourself 😎), which went live exactly SIX YEARS AGO today! (Check out some unearthed footage about the origins of the blog c/o Gillian of Shadow Monster here.)
Since launching as a guide to Brooklyn by bands, for everyone, BdBK has taken the form of blog, radio show, book (still 4 sale, btw), shows and streams. Plus, a newsletter. But you already know that.
It all started with a godaddy domain and a dream. But it wouldn’t exist without every artist who has shared their time, art and support over the last (quick calculation) 2190 days. HUGE THANK YOU to everyone in this community. Feeling very lucky to be here.
A scene isn’t just made of people; it’s also all about the places. Along with showcasing and supporting local artists, Bands do BK was built on how much—in this city, especially—our favorite bars/venues/restaurants/parks/bodegas/barber shops/pizza shops/etc. matter to us.
That brings us, of course, to BK artists’ homebase Our Wicked Lady. As we’ve done our best to share as loudly and widely as possible, the venue that we love more than any—one that is absolutely integral to our scene… to the growth and development of artists…for the fun of fans—is in danger of closing its doors. And this weekend is the perfect time to come out and show your support.
On Saturday and Sunday, OWL is throwing an insane banger of a benefit show, kicking off at 4pm and featuring an insane lineup of artists who adore this venue as much as we do.
(Can’t make it out? You can donate to the venue’s gofundme here.)
The event will be hosted by artist, dreamboat & utter delight of a human being GOOD DELI — and, in honor of the occasion, he’s got this weekend’s SETLIST for you here.
Brief yourself on Deli and his musical stylingz via this track-by-track of Delivision — his killer (!) 2023 record — and read on for an itinerary featuring the OWL benefit + a bunch of other amazing local businesses you can go out support. (All of which, we would wager, could use your money now more than ever.)
See you on the roof this Saturday and Sunday! You better believe there’s an Our Wicked Lady tattoo in our future….

FRIDAY
Grab a mint yerba mate and a pastry from your local deli (support your local deli guys).
Leroy’s place: A store full of oddities, wonder and imagination featuring massive puppets all around the store. Buy a can of worms, a ravioli necklace or a puppet sandwich. An absolute Deli favorite, the most interesting.
Superhero supply store: Need an upgrade to your supersuit? Visit the superhero supply store if you need a new cape or a refill on Canned Cyclones. This place is chock-full of superhero necessities and, oh yeah! It’s also a creative writing center!
Robot works: Ever wanted to see a robot play an instrument? BEHOLD THE ROBOTIC CHURCH.
Museum of Food and Drink: Where does food come from? I’m not sure, but visit here, find out, and then come tell me about it at OWL.
Our Wicked Lady for Crazy Dogs and a Drink with Deli!
SATURDAY
Earl Grey and a ham, brie and arugula on a baguette and a cinnamon roll from Bushwick Bakery. Nothing like it.
A nice stroll through Maria Hernandez Park, it’ll be sunny and 40 degrees! (I’m from Boston, 40 is beautiful.)
Brooklyn Record Exchange: THEY HAVE A GREAT SELECTION OF COMEDY RECORDS. Fun Fact!: Comedy records are made for those who like to laugh.
Falafel Sandwich at Tabbouleh. This is the best falafel in Bushwick, no competition.
Domsey Express IV: NICE N CHEAP CLOTHES! Stay for a while digging around, youll find some gems. You can also buy pillows and toasters here.
OUR WICKED LADY 4PM.
SUNDAY
Circos: I would recommend you spend $100 and buy the largest cannoli in New York, BUT that would cause some serious indigestion and we don’t want you to miss the show tonight! So instead opt for a normal cannoli. I think you’ll also have room for an Inis, which is a SPECTACULAR creation consisting of a brioche bun, stuffed with cannoli cream, fried and covered in cinnamon and sugar. mmmmmm.
Visit my pals at Misha’s Flower Shop for any enlightening goodies you may need for your weekend!
Comic book and trinket shop within an old fish market: This is hands-down my favorite little spot in Brooklyn. It’s a wacky comic book, art, trinket, figurine and record shop owned by some really dope folks. This place is very special to me, give ‘em a visit!
Walk around the blocks surrounding Maria Hernandez Park looking for free stuff, one of Deli’s favorite activities. He’s currently looking for a THIN nightstand if you see one, or anything clown-related.
Carmenta’s: Pick you favorite, chicken or eggplant, parm it, add some calabrian chilis, you will never leave. Best Italian sandwich around.
Eugene : This place is an absolute GEM, a little candy store full of exotic candies, classic candies and most importantly completely unique candies invented by the mad scientist Eugene J himself. Eugene is one of the sweetest and coolest shop owners in Bushwick. You can talk for hours about candy, music, old Bushwick and life! Eugene has some insanely delicious inventions and you’ve got to try them out!
