12.16 A wknd w/ The Thing
The band on recording, rooftop gardening and TONIGHT'S holiday show at Our Wicked Lady
THE HAPPIEST OF HOLIDAYS TO YOU!
First and foremost, the BdBK HOLIDAY SHOW at Our Wicked Lady is TONIGHT, and music starts early—specifically, 7 p.m. sharp! That said, the sun sets at liiiike 3 p.m., so that means it’ll feel pretty much like normal show time anyway.
As a reminder, this is not just a show but a SOCK DRIVE, BABY, so grab a new/clean/unworn pair to donate. We will be collecting them on behalf of Knock Knock Give a Sock, an organization dedicated to “collecting socks for those in need while actively working to eliminate the stigma around homelessness.” (If you can’t make it tonight, you will be terribly missed, but should you choose, you can donate a few dollars to the fundraiser here.)
So: The show! Beyond the season of giving, ‘tis also the season of SICK TUNES, baby—and Santa’s got nothin’ to do with it. These glorious gifts will instead be delivered direct to your ear drums this evening by artists-not-elves Buff Ginger, Debbie Dopamine, TV Moms, HYPEMOM, Candy Ambulance and who else but THE THING—aka the stars of today’s SETLIST.
Our friendly Crown Heights neighbors first exploded onto our radar via Our Wicked Lady’s Winter Madness last February, where they immediately established themselves as one of our favorite bands. More recently, they’ve released two very rad singles through which they’ve managed to do what many strong live acts can’t: successfully press the enormous energy of their on-stage performance into permanence. (A feat which is actually not surprising for this group, given recording is also ~their jam~.) (More on that below.)
Alright, first order of business! Run those two songs on repeat for the next three-ish hours to pregame for tonight’s show. Second! When it comes to Saturday and Sunday, find inspiration for recreation and relaxation via the itinerary below, which offers some inside insight into a typical weekend for the people behind The Thing.
With that, we shall leave you to go out and live your life.
Stay dry, stay warm and stay cooooool—
We’ll see you at OWL in a bit <3

FRIDAY
We all have day jobs working as rooftop gardeners. So bright and early we head to the lot over in the heart of NYC, Long Island City baby! Gotta hop on the destination Nostrand G train but first a quick pit stop at mcmickle grocery. Great pickles there. Once we arrive at the lot we load up our box truck. Graciously provided by the saints over at CC rental trucks. A true NYC staple. After scarfing down some egg and cheeses from the Court Square Diner we meander through the crowded streets across the Queensboro Bridge. We eventually make our way onto the rock that is Manhattan.
After a long day of trimming back hedges for some of the wealthiest people in the city (Jeff Bezos is one of the clients) we hop on the A train and return to our squalor. Couple of road beers from the local bodega outta set us up right for the weekend. We stop by our favorite joint, the Broccoli Farm (corner of Franklin and Pacific) and say Hi to Allehenny, he is the man. Once back home we catch up with the rest of our roommates. We all live in a 7-person townhouse and share the space with our peers, Tennis Courts (fellow Brooklyn Band). We make a big dinner (singer, Zane Acord, makes a mean pasta fazool) and try to sort out plans. We don't make it too far away from the house and end up drinking negronis at RiAlto Grande (Franklin Street). Hopefully we run into Sam herself.

SATURDAY
The start of Saturday is the start of another kind of work. We all head over to our studio in East Williamsburg. We spent some serious time building out this place and it is our haven. We call it Onion Records. We noodle around and spend an ungodly amount of time recording there. Since we’re now in Easy Willy we make our way over to say hi to our good friends’ at JunkYard Thrift. It’s always a good time with those lovely ladies and they have a great selection of clothes! We end the night either going back to record or to go play pool somewhere. Carmelo's or the Bushwick Ice House are great options.
SUNDAY
After a night of antics, you gotta start Sunday off right. Ras Ethiopian (Franklin St) has the best brunch around. Flavors you've never even dreamed of hop right off the plate. Guy Fieri would keel over if his sweet lips touched one bite. After brunch, a walk around Prospect Park hits the spot. The turtles there are beautiful. Once we've gotten our fill, we make our way back over to Easy Willy to hit Onion Records. “Always record!” ( - Quote From Tenacious D). Sunday Night is a great night for rock shows as well. Whether it’s Sunday Soul Scream at OWL or a one off show at the Sultan Room, it's always going to be a blast of a night!
