10.8 A wknd w/ Colatura
The band on pierogis, Pokémon dance parties and drinking like Gossip Girl
!TGIF! DO THE DAMN THING WITH COLATURA
Everyone knows that the best things come in threes: musketeers, amigos, LOTR movies… apparently Reese’s cups in Canada (?!?!) … and, in the case of Colatura, lead vocalists. Beyond joint writing duties and behind-the-scenes collaboration, Jennica, Digo and Meredith seamlessly pass the baton (mic) in studio and on stage, which not only makes for more diversity and dimension (+ hella noiiiice harmonies) but also, should it suit your fancy, a very fun and dangerous drinking game we like to call Guess Who’s Gonna Sing Next™. (We are not liable for any damages that may result.)
It’s also worth stating—because it always is—that along with being extremely talented artists, they’re also very nice people, and some of our favorites to see not just on stage, but at the bar, in the crowd and anywhere/everywhere out in the wiiiild of Brooklyn. Do yourself a favor: befriend them.
NOW! On the music-news front. Following the August release of their single “King Kalm”—and accompanying music video featuring Justin Buschardt of Sharkswimmer + his incognito overalls-wearing gorilla alter ego skateboarding through the city—the band just dropped their new song “The Met” TODAY, and while there is sadly no sk8r ape visual accompaniment (yet!), it’s 100% the perfect put-on-repeat-while-crying-alone-in-an-Uber (or park! bodega! dentist office?) anthem. So we hear.
Of the new track, the band says:
“You ever have one of those ‘take yourself on a date’ solo days that's supposed to be empowering - a big middle finger to the dating world - but turns into something altogether the opposite? It's a beautiful day, you're alone walking the halls of the Met museum, taking in culture, searching for inspiration, but with no one by your side to share it with you struggle to find the beauty in any of the art and instead get lost in your own head.”
Not NOW, Monet. I'm dealing with some shit, okay???? We digress.
“The Met” is the second excelllllent single from the band’s forthcoming album, comin’ atcha in early 2022, and you can celebrate the release in the most fun and non-solo and un-bummed of fashions TONIGHT at the party (*not show*) the band is hosting in Greenpoint. (DM 4 address.)
As for the rest of the weekend, wellllll you guessed it! Colatura has got you covered. Read on for a (quite hilarious) NYC itinerary featuring shows n saunas n Seinfeld n shrooms—and nary a sad lonely Met visit in sight.
The weekend starts NOW. We sincerely hope you have a great one~

FRIDAY
Okay it's Friday so you should take a sick day. You worked hard this week. So send a dramatic email to your boss, then go back to sleep before they reply. Great, you’ve slept in and it’s midday now, and you're probably feeling a bit groggy. So let's fuel up. Head off to SEY coffee in Bushwick - it's one of the best roasters in the city - and grab a pour over to get you sorted.
Since you're in the area, you should grab some cute decor at Friends New York, a loft on Bogart where you can score some much needed swag like candles shaped like a bowl of fruit loops, or the essential coffee mug that doubles as a water bong. It's everything you never knew you needed.
After you find that perfect ‘90s mood ring, the only logical thing to do is to head to Pierozek in Greenpoint, a cool polish restaurant on Manhattan ave. It just happens to be national pierogi day, and they are hosting a pierogi eating contest. You'll already be in Greenpoint for the Colatura party so it only makes sense that you stop in here (however if they start dipping the pierogis into water get the hell out of there).
You have some time to kill before the party starts at 8pm, so you should head over to Academy Records. As always, head straight to the "New Used" section; it lets everyone know that you can't be bothered with their picked over stock, you're only there for gems. Hopefully you'll score a neat Spin Doctors LP, because nothing says discount bin like the funk tinged blues rock of The Spin Doctors.
Okay the Colatura party is starting so you better DM them and ask for the address. Now you’ve got the deets, so head straight there. After a few hours have passed, approach whoever is DJing and ask if they will play your new Spin Doctors LP. Explain how John Popper from The Blues Travelers was in the band and that he is a wicked harmonica player.
Bummer, the party is done but you haven't had enough, so put on Colatura's new single ‘The Met’ and listen on repeat until you get home.
Don't forget to brush your teeth.
SATURDAY
You are probably feeling a bit rough right now, but don't worry we got you sorted. Jump on the MTA and head to the outer borough of Manhattan. Nothing gets the toxins out like a platza massage at the Russian Bath House on 10th st.You lie in a sweltering sauna while a barely clothed Russian man beats you with oak bushels. It will get the blood pumping and will slap the hangover straight out of you. [Ed note: The bath house is temporarily closed; def take note for future wknds, though. And maybe have a bloody mary instead.]
Now that you feel renewed and refreshed, time to get some exercise in. Head over to rat rock in Central Park for some bouldering. Test your skill and finger strength on some of the infamous routes. Then realize you are still way too hungover for this and bail.
From Central Park, head south and start walking around Manhattan aimlessly. When you see a random line cueing, immediately join in without asking any questions. You really never know what you might stumble into - the newest food trend, a new iphone, a rapid test site. Whatever it is, it will be worth it, I promise.
You’re still in the city and you're probably feeling a bit fancy, so head to Grand Central with your new iPhone. Go down to the concourse where you'll find The Grand Central Oyster Bar. Once you get there, you'll see it's closed on Saturdays... so shake your fist at the entrance and wonder out loud what kind of maniacs are closed on Saturday. Then take a second and think to yourself what a devastating impact the shutdown must have had on a business with no outdoor seating, and that since this is a transit hub that probably sees decreased traffic over the weekend, it only makes sense to be opened on a limited basis as they try and rebuild... now feel really guilty for your outburst.
Anyways, since you are already at Grand Central, might as well head upstairs to The Campbell Bar and check out where the producers of the new Gossip Girl think rich gen z kids hang out. Order a cosmo and smile at how funny and ironic you are being. Stop smiling when the bill comes.
Since you missed out on oysters, you'll need some food to offset the citrus vodka you just chugged. So head down to the Lower East Side and stop at the best dumpling spot in the city. It's on Eldridge Street (no, not that place). If you run into the crowds outside Vanessa’s, you've gone too far.
That's enough of Manhattan. Rent a Citi Bike and head over the Williamsburg Bridge back into Brooklyn.
Now you are back home and it's time to find out what you are doing tonight. Originally you saw that DEHD was playing the new Brooklyn venue Brooklyn Made, and you thought okay perfect, definitely going to that. Then at the last minute you 180 and decide instead to hit up Wonderville, who are having a party mashup of house music and Pokemon called Pokedecks. So against your better judgement you head there.
Upon arrival, you quickly realize that the mashup sounded better in your head and that house music sounds nothing like The Spin Doctors. So you head over to the arcade at Wonderville and play A Place To Bury Strangers pinball. You feel disappointed about missing the DEHD show, also you are probably hungry. So you should head over to La Isla Cuchifrito on Graham Ave, a late night Puerto Rican spot that specializes in fried food. You should order mofongo, blood sausage, chicharron, and beans and rice. Now eat it while falling asleep on the couch, because you are an Adult after all.
SUNDAY
Okay you made it to Sunday, congratulations. Now the best way to temper a day 2 hangover is to take in a little culture. So grab yourself an electric scooter, but before you get on, take a small amount of mushrooms - not too much, but not too little. Try and take the perfect amount, this is important. Now head to Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. If you time it right, the mushrooms should be kicking in right when you get there. Now walk around the park/art exhibits and have a reset. Hangout by the water for a bit, try and find a little inner peace, and as you are slowly looking out across the tranquil east river think to yourself, "you know what that new Colatura single ‘The Met’ is quite a catchy tune”.
Okay the ’shrooms have worn off, time for some adventure. Jump on the 7 train and head to the second to last stop. In the shadows of Citi Field is a really trashy pitch and putt golf course, but the kind of trashy you can definitely get behind. I mean who doesn't want to wander around the desolate wasteland that is Willets Point, while drinking tall boys of cider. Last time we were there, we saw a red tail hawk and a giant subway rat fighting. Lana Del Rey wrote a song about this place. Or maybe she didn't, but she should.
Now you are probably hungry again, and you have an important choice to make, because you are now standing directly between two of the best food neighborhoods in the city. Should you go one stop more to Flushing, home of glorious asian food malls, dim sum palaces, and Shabu Shabu buffets? Or a few stops back to Jackson Heights, home of the best taco trucks in New York, as well as numerous Colombian and Ecuadorian haunts? Or our personal favorite Jollibee, a radical Filipino fast food chain. The choice is yours. Don't let us down.
Now that you are fed and re-energized, time for a classic New York pastime. So start walking until you happen upon a random New York City Transit bus. Board it and ride it for exactly 17 stops. Now get off at the 17 stop, no matter what.
If you got on the right bus, you should now be at Dead Horse Bay, a beautiful inlet just south of the Rockaways. Its trash strewn shores and multiple B-list shipwrecks are the perfect backdrop for a DIY laser tag game. The house rules include the use of finger guns and reliance on the honor system. So play nicely.
Now that you've had yourself some beach time, hit the links, and reflected on what a great track ‘The Met’ is, you should head back to Bushwick. There is a rad show at The Broadway with Ducks Ltd. Foyer Red & Deer Scout, so you should probably go to that. Or just stay in and watch reruns of Seinfeld. The choice is yours.
